Program Manager’s Corner: We had an ambitious quarter since our last newsletter. During the pe-
riod of 1 Jan thru 31 March 2009, your DES team responded to 611 work requests. The request complexi-
ties ranged from minor survey modifications to the development of the NWC and ICAF transcripts. A ma-
jor tenant of our mission statement is to exceed our customer’s expectation. To ensure we are meeting our
goal, we sent a customer service survey to 39 randomly selected individuals that recently submitted work
requests. We received the following anonymous responses:
General comments:
• DES is a winner. I wish we had this system
years ago. It has cut my time working on pro-
jects in half.
• Great service from DES team. Every time I talk
to someone from the DES team, my questions
are answered and people are kind and helpful.
Excellent job to everyone.
• DES staff is always very responsive in identify-
ing problem and making correction.
• DES personnel are extremely competent, pa-
tient, easy to work with, prompt and profes-
sional. I am impressed by how much time they
are willing to spend working to resolve issues
and how helpful they are in helping educate me
so that future problems are reduced.
• I have yet to see a resolution to any problem.
• I've been 100% satisfied with both the quality
and timeliness of the response to our NWC
assessment requests. In particular, the attitude
of the DES personnel is one of client service,
which is very much appreciated.
• I have been dealing with IT professionals since
1995. In my opinion the DES technicians/staff
are the most knowledgeable, courteous, cus-
tomer focused professionals I have ever dealt
with. Thank you for making my job (life) so
much easier.

DES User Group: A DES user group meets every Monday at the North Campus. Representations from
each of the college’s and components discuss various DES issues, such as data element standardization,
mandatory data collection, etc. The Group is chaired by Dr. John Yaeger of the NDU Provost Office. The
Working Group mission is to support NDU leadership by recommending DES policies and procedures that
will sustain and improve educational programs and enhance accountability across the university. The current
tasks are Standardization of the Biobook Data Elements and the Student Registration Forms Data Elements.
If you like to participate, please contact Mr. Larry Johnson at the University Registrar’s Office.
DES Security + Certifications:
Mr. Jaime Camba and Mr. Dave Ev-
ans have completed their Security +
Certifications. With the exception of
our two March 2009 hires, your DES
team is 100% Security + Certified!
Our new DES hires will be taking the
Security + exam in the near future.
Grade Book Enhancement: Mr. Dong Ngo developed an
interface that generates a list of all the current students who are
missing a grade. This tool expedites the process of notifying fac-
ulty members of their required grade input. The tool also allows
for separate grade verifications for both core courses and electives.
Would you like to see more? Please feel free to contact a DES ad-
ministrator, and we will use Adobe Connect to provide a demo for
you and your organization.
DES Best Practices: On April 2008, DES became the University’s Student, Staff, and Faculty system
of record. Since then, many interfaces have been built to meet our customer’s needs. The customized inter-
faces are designed to meet individual college processes but can also be used across the university. Thus, on
May 27th, 2009, the DES team will conduct two DES vignettes at JFSC to demonstrate several of the inter-
faces. One session focuses on our Senior Leaders and the second session will focus on the staff. The DES
team will also conduct the vignettes at the North Campus on June 12th. More information will be dissemi-
nated regarding the DES Best Practices demos in the near future.
IRMC Implementation
The completion of the new database schema is
near. Once inspected and accepted by IRMC
administrators, the DES programming team will
continue full steam ahead with .net program-
ming. Mr. Martin Escano and Mr. Quang
Nguyen are working very close with Dr. George
Fulda and Ms. Jennifer Raabe to ensure all the
IRMC requirements are properly addressed.

New Password Reset Process Implementation
Bottom Line…This process will occur incrementally. The
North Campus will transition after the AY09 graduation.
The respective colleges and components will inform you
after each has agreed on an implementation date. At this
time, there is no need for our users to change their current
DES password. With this information out of the way, the
new password reset process is explained below. The first
time you log into DES, you will be required to provide:
• USER ID
• Select and answer 3 security challenge questions
• Preferred email address
If a password reset is required, please click on the pass-
word reset link and answer a previously identified chal-
lenge question. If the answer is entered successfully, a
new temporary password (with a 12 hour expiration time
frame) will be sent to your preferred email address.
Customer Base Expansion
Ms. Mixie Monrroy, our Database Ad-
ministrator loaded 335 additional NDU
and Component personnel records from
uNet into DES. The Biobook link has
been placed on the users’ DES home
page and Mr. Larry Johnson is monitor-
ing its completion. The goal is to create
a Senior Leadership DES report next
month. Biobook completion is a vital
management tool for the University. It
allows personnel administrators an effi-
cient way to manage faculty and staff
demographics, credentials, and accredi-
tation. If you believe someone in your
organization is not in DES, please con-
tact Mr. Larry Johnson at the University
Registrar’s Office or contact Mr. Kevin
Denny. Kevin is located at NDU-CIO,
Building 64, Room 3400.
