2. About Maple
Ridge
• Maple Ridge is a city in BC, located
in the northeaster section of
Vancouver between the Fraser
River and the Golden Ears. The
Golden Ears is a group of Mountain
summits that are located at the
southernmost of the Garibaldi
Ranges of the Coast Mountains,
Maple Ridge is also home to many
trails, parks, and forested areas for
individuals to use ranging from
easier leisurely walks to more
challenging hikes.

3. Public Sector
• A public sector is usually free or there are no fees to
pay to be able to access the facility and it is a necessary
establishment for the community. The place is facility
for the public and is easily accessible for all to use. The
public services are facilities that the Government either
indirectly or directly delivers leisure and recreation
services (Lunn, 2020 p3) and is it to be able to enhance
the quality of life and well-being of the individuals in
the community. There can be things there like fitness
options, sports programs, age-related or community
activities, events, art, and leadership opportunities. The
facility is funded through tax revenue and user fees,
and other ways like small grants, and sponsorships or
ads. The general public is allowed access to the facility,
but some focus clientele can be individuals who are
underserved that can also be found at community
centers, parks, schools, general areas in a town and this
can be all the time or during seasons.

School

• Service Sector – Public. A
public school like Garibaldi is
able to provide services such
as “Fitness, sport, age-related
programs, events, arts, and
leadership” (Lunn 2020, p 3)

• At Garibaldi Secondary, students have
the opportunities to and are required
to participate in physical education
every year as a class. The gym
facilities is open to the public and
provides the students and the
community with opportunities to
"reinforces values and ideals of
establishing and maintaining a healthy
lifestyle to the user” (Lunn 2020, p 3).
The school is able to use “Taxpayer
and user fees, small grants, and
sponsorship/ads” (Lunn 2020, p3) for
the community to be able to use the
facilities and make it accessible for all.

p3)

• The Maple Ridge Leisure Centre is an
example of recreation as is provides many
opportunities of recreation activities like
swimming, fitness, Physiotherapy, art
classes and more and as cited by Lunn,
“Recreation is a fundamental human need
for persons of all ages and is essential to
a person’s physical and social well-being
and to overall quality of life, Recreation
services play a significant role in the
creation of cohesive and quality
communities”(Lunn 2020, p5). The leisure
Centre services are available and
accessible to the general public and
provide the community with many leisure
opportunities.

provide services like
“fitness, sports, events,
leadership, and age-related
programs” (Lunn 2020, p3)

• The Planet Ice rink is an example of recreation as it is open and
accessible to the general public and provides recreation
opportunities such as skating lessons, public skate, figure
skating programs, curling, lacrosse and hockey. There are
different activities and programs that run daily for all age ranges
to participate. The rink promotes healthy living and recreation
as “general public are directly addressed through the offering of
recreation services”(Lunn 2020, p5)
10. Commercial
Sector
• A commercial sector is a service provided that is cost
oriented. The commercial services can range from travel
and tourism, entertainment services, leisure services in the
natural environment, hospitality/food services, and retail
activities and can also be divided into three types of
services: outdoor commercial recreation, indoor
commercial recreation, and clubs (Lunn 2020, p6)
Sometimes in a community in the sport and recreation area,
this sector can serve the general public in a positive way as
there may not be a lot of profit coming in. These services
are based on a consumer wants and or needs and is also
based on the demand of it in a community. This can range
from high level training, specialized services, high quality
facilities, and more. These services operate based off
revenue from consumers, corporate sponsorships,
participants using the service, and advertising. The
individuals who run these services are individuals hired to
work, corporations, and partnerships. The focus clientele
range from individuals who are seeking the specific
service, the general public, and anyone who can afford the
service or use of the facility.
11. Fitness Unlimited

Fitness unlimited is
commercial as it is a service
that is “Provided for a cost;
profit oriented and Some,
especially in sport and
recreation businesses, serve
public good of some
kind”(Lunn 2020, p6) as there
are memberships in order to
attend

• Fitness Unlimited is an example of
recreation as it “is recognized as the need
for innovative leisure and recreation goods,
supplies, and services” (Lunn 2020, p 6).
The gym provides a place for individuals to
be able to come, purchase a type of
membership either monthly or yearly, and
partake in classes like spin, yoga, stretch,
metabolic, and HIT classes. The gym
promotes healthy living and a place for
people to work on their fitness. The gym
also provides an example of coaching in
the form of personal trainers that you can
purchase sessions with. The gym makes
profit from the memberships and personal
training sessions.

• The Maple Ridge Dance Circle is an
example of physical education, and
coaching as it provides physical education
opportunities in class settings like tap,
jazz, ballet, acro, and musical theatre. It
also promotes healthy living as individuals
can get up and move their bodies to
increase their fitness levels while learning
new skills. The Dance circle uses the
“Revenue from fees; Participants
{tuition},and sponsorships (Lunn 2020, pp
6,7) to keep running the classes and pay
their teachers. The teachers need to have
certificates of levels passed for dance to
be able to teach.

is in the commercial sector as to be
able to attend the gym the “Consumer
pays and for which the supplier
expects to make a profit”(MacLean,
Peterson, & Martin, 1985, p. 220, as
cited in Lunn 2020, p 6). The gym also
relies on the “Revenue from fees;
{and}Participants” (Lunn 2020, pp 6,7)
in the form of weekly, monthly, and
yearly membership passes.

• Trevor Linden Fitness gym is an
indoor commercial recreation
facility as individuals can come
and work on their fitness and
promote a healthy living style.
The gym offers equipment to be
able to train at high level training
and lower-level training. The
gym is also “recognized {for} the
need for innovative leisure and
recreation goods, supplies, and
services” (Lunn 2020, p 6).
17. Voluntary
Sector
• Voluntary sector is also known as non-profit and
non-governmental organizations and are for
voluntary leisure and recreation organizations in a
community. The voluntary sector usually will have
the most connection with local communities as it
is run and operated primarily by volunteers and
the five key features of non-profit organizations
are that they are organized, private, non-profit
distributing, self-governing, and voluntary (Lunn
2020, p8). These organizations make profit to be
able to sustain their services and will only
generate enough profit to cover their costs. It is
also funded from memberships and donations,
user fees, sponsorships, and fundraisers. Adult
individuals in the community was pay as a user
and children and youth will be able to participate
by taxpayer funds, sponsorships, and grants like
from kid’s sport and jumpstart. These services are
beneficial for the community and they can range
from fitness, sports, age related activities and
programs, events, and art.
18. Meadow Ridge Female
Minor Hockey
Association

• Service Sector – Volunteer. The
Meadow Ridge Barracudas is a
Female Minor Hockey Association
and it relies on the help of
volunteers an members to help run
these teams and boards. The
teams rely on “fundraising, and
corporate sponsorships” and can
also sponsor their athletes from
“funding from Kidsport/Jumpstart”

• The Meadow Ridge Female Minor Hockey
Association is an example of coaching and
recreation as the participation of a sport and
playing is important for “for addressing the
needs of society, including leisure and
recreation” (Lunn 2020, p10) and it brings the
community together. The growth of these
organizations depends and will indicate “how
future leisure and recreation needs of
Canadians will increasingly be addressed by
the voluntary sector” (Lunn 2020, p 10 ). The
organization focuses on fun, skill growth, and
enjoying the game which leads to leisure .The
coaches need to have a coaching certificate
and agree to coach under the BC Hockey Code
of Conduct

arts centre that offers an art gallery,
concerts, films, classes & live

• The Act Maple Ridge provides the
community with recreation opportunities as
“age-related programs, events, arts,
leadership etc.” (Lunn 2020, p9) are
provided at this facility. The Act can help
individuals who are interested in the arts
like theatre productions, dance and art can
come here to further their skills while also
working on their leadership roles as well.
The Act is also a non-profit organization as
some event are accessed through
donation to the programs that are ran there
and it provides a facility for entertainers so
show their craft to the public.

Programs in your community”
(MRSC 2020) .

• The Maple Ridge Skating Club provides a
space for individuals to come and further their
skating skills, whether it be free skate, dance,
synchro, or learn to skate. There are
examples of recreation, physical education,
and coaching as there are opportunities to
work with a private coach, participate in off
ice dryland training and skating with a team.
Their programs are “critically important for
addressing the needs of society, including
leisure and recreation” (Lunn 2020, p10).
