Private Oil & Gas Company Based in Colombia
Throughout the early part of 2015, investors became concerned about in
indebted oil producer operating in Colombia’s Llanos Basin. As we
responded to daily calls from institutional investors, we consistently stated
that the company’s cash burn, driven by high production costs and low oil
prices, would cause the company to default “fairly soon”. However, as the
rating agencies maintained the high BB-ratings, the company was able to
secure a $1 billion equity investment from one of Mexico’s largest and
most respected conglomerates. We advised our clients to wait for the
bankruptcy process before acquiring specific contracts and fixed assets.
The company defaulted six months later.

CASE STUDIES
Steel Pipe Manufacturer Based in Brazil
We evaluated a potential secured lending transaction for a steel pipe
manufacturer in Brazil, that sold into the oil and gas industry. Based on our
work in Brazil, and our in-depth understanding of Petrobras and the fluid
political situation in the country, we advised against lending to the
borrower in mid-2015. The steel pipe manufacturer defaulted on its other
debt just three months later. The investment firm avoided a $5 million loss.
We believe some of the best investments, are the one’s you never make.
