Mission Statement
The Gender and Sexuality Workshop aims to foster an environment of inclusion for
LGBTQIA* individuals on campus and in the surrounding community. The program
raises awareness through:
 Educating individuals on LGBTQIA* issues relating to gender and
sexuality and how one can intervene when they witness
discrimination.
 Creating brave spaces that challenge institutional and interpersonal
forms of oppression.

How Can Identifying as an Ally become Problematic?
 Conversations are most often centered on the ego and
privilege of the Ally
 With the ego and privilege of a person being centered,
more space is taken discussing what the Ally should do
with their privilege
 The result of taking up this space is promoting a good ally,
rather than the identities that allies should be promoting
 In order to promote themselves, Allies may often exploit,
or act as if to “save” oppressed identities.
 With this ego, space and privilege, Allies are in a position
to navigate through a community without actually doing
anything for it.
 These behaviors feed into the Ally Industrial Complex.
The accomplice: In order to move away from the Ally Industrial Complex, the Accomplice seeks to strategically
exploit their own privilege, following the lead of members within a marginalized community to map out systematic
forms of oppression and marginalization. Accomplices are aware that they may not know what makes most
strategic sense; not reacting out of guilt, they are transparent in their process and understand solutions will often not
come from them. The accomplice may jeapordize their own privileges and postional power.

  • 3. 2 Ally Space Privilege Ego How Can Identifying as an Ally become Problematic?  Conversations are most often centered on the ego and privilege of the Ally  With the ego and privilege of a person being centered, more space is taken discussing what the Ally should do with their privilege  The result of taking up this space is promoting a good ally, rather than the identities that allies should be promoting  In order to promote themselves, Allies may often exploit, or act as if to “save” oppressed identities.  With this ego, space and privilege, Allies are in a position to navigate through a community without actually doing anything for it.  These behaviors feed into the Ally Industrial Complex. The accomplice: In order to move away from the Ally Industrial Complex, the Accomplice seeks to strategically exploit their own privilege, following the lead of members within a marginalized community to map out systematic forms of oppression and marginalization. Accomplices are aware that they may not know what makes most strategic sense; not reacting out of guilt, they are transparent in their process and understand solutions will often not come from them. The accomplice may jeapordize their own privileges and postional power.
