Advertisers
• An advertiser is a person or company that pays for
a product, event, or job to be advertised online, in
a newspaper, on television, or on a poster.
• The job duties of an advertiser include conducting
market research, collaborating with the sales and
design teams to create targeted ad campaigns,
reviewing multimedia ads to ensure consistent
brand voice, and monitoring the performance of
ad campaigns to measure return on investment.
C
Advertisers
• Advertisers affect the media both directly and
indirectly.
• Advertisers exert power over the information
programming they sponsor.
• They also influence the text of news as it is
reported, the actual form and content of
information as it is presented to consumers.
• Since advertisers want to reach the public so that
they can sell their products well, they naturally
support the media which are popular with the
public.
Advertisers
• As the major source of finance for the two leading
commercial media sectors - the press and
commercial broadcasting - advertisers determine
the structure of media industries simply by
choosing where to spend their money and
support media outlets that reach the right
demographic groups, audiences that consume the
most.
Advertising Agency
• An advertising agency is an independent
organization set up to render specialized services
in advertising in particular and in marketing in
general.
• Advertising agencies started as space brokers for
the handling of the advertisements placed in
newspapers.
• Over the years, the function of the agencies has
changed.
• Their main job today is not to aid media but to
serve advertisers.
C
Advertising Agency
• An advertising agency, (abbreviated to 'ad
agency,') is a team of experts appointed by a
client to plan, produce and place advertising
campaigns in the media.
• They are called agencies, because literally they are
agents of the media who pay them the
commission, and the media thus becomes the
principal.
• Media pays commission to only accredited
agencies (INS accreditation).
Evolution & History of Advertising Agency
• Volney B Palmer in Philadelphia started the first
Ad agency as a space broker in 1841.
• He acted as a simple agent, selling space for his
client newspaper on a commission basis.
• He made no effort to help the advertiser prepare
copy, design a layout or provide the many
specialized services now performed by a modern
agency.
• Since then, the nature of an agency has changed
considerably, but the method of compensation in
the form or a fixed percentage of advertising
billing continues. C
Evolution & History of Advertising Agency
• It was only by the beginning of the last century
that the agency started to prepare advertisements
and deliver them through the advertisements
media.
• Lord and Thomas was probably the first agency in
the USA, with a reputation for creative work in
advertising.
• Other agencies also started adopting the new
services; and soon many advertisement agencies
had established departments for copywriting,
artwork, layout design, media selection, etc.
Evolution & History of Advertising Agency
• Towards the end of the first half of the last century,
there were several large agencies offering a full
range of advertising services.
• They produced effective advertisements by taking
into account consumer psychology and human
needs and wants.
• Creative advertising appeals effectively influenced
consumers to buy the advertised products and
services.
• In fact, advertising at this stage, became a part of
the overall marketing mix, furthering the sales and
marketing strategy.
• In India, advertising business is worth Rs. 15,000
crores.
• There were only 62 advertising agencies in 1958,
which increased to 168 in 1978.
• There are more than 500 ad agencies today.
• The oldest and largest advertisement agency in
India is Hindustan Thompson Associates Ltd.
• The second largest advertisement agency is Lintas.
Mumbai is considered to be the Mecca of Indian
advertising.
• These days agencies are also being set up at
Bangalore, Madras, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and
Delhi.
Evolution & History of Advertising Agency
Evolution & History of Advertising Agency
• In India the ad agencies are sole proprietary
concern, partnership or private limited companies.
• Agencies like HTA, Lintas, Clarion and O & M
have shaped the entire advertising industry in the
country.
• Many Indians firms are coming up, by importing
Western ad techniques.
Structure Role and Functions of Ad Agency
• ‘Account’ in advertising parlance means a client.
Thus, Hindustan Lever is an account for Lintas.
Accounts Executive or Director:
• The agency's key executive is Accounts Executive
(he is accounts director when he is a member of
the Board in case of a limited agency).
• The accounts executive is a link between the
agency and client.
C
Structure Role and Functions of Ad Agency
Functions of Accounts Executives:
• He understands what the client wants.
• He has to get this done through his agency.
• The marketing or sales or advertising department
of the client briefs him.
• He communicates this to the agency people.
• He is also called client service executive.
Structure Role and Functions of Ad Agency
• Modern day agencies have two major sections –
Creative side and Production side.
• The creative section has a team of bright, talented
copywriters who do the wording of an
advertisement.
• Copywriters contribute to the theme of an
advertisement, like a college girl asking another
the secret of her flawless complexion, and as an
answer coming to know that it is Clearasil Cream.
• This is called copy platform.
Structure Role and Functions of Ad Agency
• The copywriters report to their head, who may be
called Copy Chief or Chief Copywriter.
• But merely the copy is not enough.
• The visualiser puts on paper what has been
thought out by the copywriter and designs the ad.
• He takes the help of layout artists, typographers
and finished artists who prepare the final artwork.
• Creative energies of copywriters must be
coordinated with design energies of visualisers.
• The person who performs this role is called the
Creative Director.
Structure Role and Functions of Ad Agency
• Then, there is the studio-based production
department, which delivers a complete approved
ad copy.
• This department is in charge of the production
manager who has several assistants.
• For prints ads, these people do typography,
lettering, blocks etc.
• Production manager organizes the workflow.
• After this the Media planner understands the
budget and how the ad is to allocated in various
media.
Structure Role and Functions of Ad Agency
• In addition to this the agencies also have a
Marketing Research Department, which does
product research, consumer research, positioning
studies, price and distribution research, sales and
packaging research and motivational research.
Types of Advertising Agencies
Full service agency:
• Offers its clients a full range of marketing,
communications and production services
including planning, creating the advertisement,
performing research and selecting media.
In house agency:
• An organisation may decide to establish its own
operation for all services of an ad agency within
its own structure.
• The in-house agency is owned out right by and
operated under the direct supervision of the
advertiser. C
Types of Advertising Agencies
A creative boutique:
• It is an agency that provides only creative services.
• The client may seek outside creative talent.
• Full service agencies often subcontract work to
creative boutiques.
Media buying services:
• These are independent companies specialized in the
buying of media.
• Both agencies and clients utilize their services.
• Media buying services purchase large amounts of
time & space, at huge discounts and can save the
small agency or client money on media purchases.
Types of Advertising Agencies
The A-la-carte agency:
• Some advertisers prefer to order a-la-carte rather
than using all of an agency’s services.
• A la carte services can be purchased from a full
service agency or from an individual firm that
specializes only in certain fields.
Special service agency:
• Some agencies focus their efforts only in some
selected areas and then become specialists in
those areas.
• These firms are called special service groups.
Functions of a Full Service Advertising Agency
Research:
• Even prior to the formulation of the plan, an
agency must do some research.
• The scope of research has expanded so much
that, in recent years, independent specialized
research organizations have been created to meet
the expanded needs of both marketing and
advertising research.
C
Functions of a Full Service Advertising Agency
Planning:
• The development of an advertising plan is usually
prepared in conjunction with the client company.
• An essential part of planning is budgeting and the
ad agency usually provides alternative budget
proposals to help the client determine how much
should he spend on advertising.
Functions of a Full Service Advertising Agency
Creative Services:
• Copy writers frequently work in conjunction with
artists in the preparation of print advertising, and
copy writers, art directors and broadcast
producers usually combine their efforts in
preparation of broadcast selling messages.
Functions of a Full Service Advertising Agency
Print and Broadcast Production:
• Print production people are responsible for
converting ad copy into printing plates used to
produce finished advertisements.
• Print production workers must maintain contact
with printers, typographers, type setters, and
photoengravers.
• They prepare the story boards and choose Props,
costumes and scenery.
• The actual mechanical production of the
commercial may be done by an outside producer
under the supervision of an agency TV producer.
Functions of a Full Service Advertising Agency
Media Selection:
• Media choice involves knowledge of each
medium’s characteristics and its coverage, as well
as an understanding of the target market to be
reached.
• An agency must select what it considers to be the
best medium, must contact the various media,
execute the contracts, and pay media bills.
Functions of a Full Service Advertising Agency
Account Management:
• Continuing and close contact must be established
to promote communication and understanding
between the client and agency.
• The agency establishes a contact person to
maintain this liaison.
• The contact person must know the functions and
activities of both the agency and client and must
be able to interpret these satisfactorily to both
organizations.
Functions of a Full Service Advertising Agency
Accounting:
• Since the agency is responsible for payment to
media, it has to keep accurate accounts of billing,
to check the appearance of advertisements, and
to maintain records of payments.
Functions of a Full Service Advertising Agency
Other Services:
• In order to provide a total marketing concept,
agencies become more involved in promotional
activities that are not strictly advertising.
• Some agencies provide merchandising for their
clients; they create sales promotional materials,
aid in dealer advertising campaigns, execute point
of purchase displays, and help develop contests..
• They may also offer expertise in public relations..
• Some larger agencies may go beyond promotion
and provide such services as sales forecasting,
new product planning, and package development.
Agency Compensation
Advertising agency revenues come from two
sources:
Commission basis:
• The billing based compensation system, labelled
as ‘commission system’, provides the agency with
money from the advertising media.
• The commission is a percentage based on the
medium’s charge for the advertising space or time
used by the advertiser.
C
Agency Compensation
Advertising agency revenues come from two
sources:
Cost basis or fee system:
• In the cost based compensation system, often
called the ‘fee system’, the agency receives fixed
fees for services given to clients.
