TUNDRA ECOSYSTEM
o Tundra ecosystems are devoid of
trees and are found in cold
climates or where rainfall is
scarce. These are covered with
snow for most of the year. Tundra
type of ecosystem is found in the
Arctic or mountain tops.
DESERT ECOSYSTEM
o Deserts are found throughout
the world. These are regions
with little rainfall and scarce
vegetation. The days are hot,
and the nights are cold.
AQUATIC ECOSYSTEM
SECOND TYPE OF ECOSYSTEM
o Aquatic ecosystems are
ecosystems present in a
body of water.
These can be further divided into two
(2) types, namely:
1. Freshwater Ecosystem
2. Marine Ecosystem
FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEM
o The freshwater ecosystem is
an aquatic ecosystem that
includes lakes, ponds, rivers,
streams and wetlands. These
have no salt content in
contrast with the marine
ecosystem.
MARINE ECOSYSTEM
oThe marine ecosystem
includes seas and oceans.
These have a more
substantial salt content
and greater biodiversity in
comparison to the
freshwater ecosystem.

PASS THE DICE ANSWER:
Give the 4 TYPES
OF TERRESTRIAL
ECOSYSTEM
STRUCTURE
OF
ECOSYSTEM
o The structure of an ecosystem is
essentially a description of an
environment’s organisms and physical
features. This includes the amount and
distribution of energy in the
environment.
STRUCTURE
OF ECOSYSTEM
STRUCTURE
OF ECOSYSTEM
Two (2) main components,
namely:
o ABIOTIC COMPONENTS
o BIOTIC COMPONENTS
DIAGRAM OF STRUCTURE OF ECOSYSTEM
BIOTIC COMPONENTS
Biotic components are categorized
into three (3):
o Producers
o Consumers
o Decomposers
BIOTIC COMPONENTS
PRODUCERS
o include all autotrophs such as green
plants. They are called autotrophs as
they can produce food through the
process of photosynthesis. They are
responsible for producing all of the
energy in the ecosystem.
o Consequently, all other organisms
higher up on the food chain rely on
producers for food.
BIOTIC COMPONENTS
PRODUCERS
BIOTIC COMPONENTS
CONSUMERS
o or heterotrophs are organisms that
depend on other organisms for
food.
o Mainly animals.
Consumers are further classified into
three(3); PRIMARY CONSUMERS,
SECONDARY CONSUMERS and TERTIARY
CONSUMERS.
BIOTIC COMPONENTS
PRIMARY CONSUMERS
o are always herbivores as
they rely on producers for
food.
o They can be animals such
as elephant, cows,
grasshopper, goat, rabbit
etc.
BIOTIC COMPONENTS
SECONDARY CONSUMERS
o are mostly carnivores as they
depend on primary
consumers for energy.
o They considered as a “meat
eater.”
o They are animals such as
Lion, Snakes, Cats, Hawks,
Wolves, Dogs.
BIOTIC COMPONENTS
TERTIARY CONSUMERS
o is an animal that obtains
its nutrition by eating
primary consumers and
secondary consumers.
o Large predators.
BIOTIC COMPONENTS
DECOMPOSERS
o It includes fungi and bacteria that obtain their nutrients from
a dead plants or animal material.
o They directly thrive on the dead and decaying organic
matter.
o Decomposers are essential for the ecosystem as they help in
recycling nutrients to be reused by plants.
ABIOTIC COMPONENTS
o Abiotic components
refer to all non- living
components in an
ecosystem that shapes
its environment.
ABIOTIC COMPONENTS
o It includes air, water,
soil, minerals, sunlight,
temperature, minerals.

PASS THE DICE ANSWER:
What are the three (3)
classification of
Consumers. Give1
example for each.
FUNCTION OF
ECOSYSTEM
FUNCTIONS OF ECOSYSTEM
The functions of the ecosystem are as
follows:
1. It regulates the essential ecological processes,
supports life systems and renders stability.
2.It is also responsible for the cycling of nutrients
between biotic and abiotic components.
3.It maintains a balance among the various trophic
levels in the ecosystem.
FUNCTIONS OF ECOSYSTEM
The functions of the ecosystem are as
follows:
4.It cycles the minerals through the biosphere.
5.The abiotic components help in the
synthesis of organic components that involve
the exchange of energy.
FUNCTIONS OF ECOSYSTEM
Functional units of an ecosystem or
functional components that work
together in an ecosystem
1. Productivity – It refers to the rate of biomass production.
2. Energy flow – It is the sequential process through which
energy flows from one trophic level to another. The energy
captured from the sun flows from producers to consumers
and then to decomposers and finally back to the
environment.
FUNCTIONS OF ECOSYSTEM
3. Decomposition – It is the process of breakdown
of dead organic material. The top-soil is the major
site for decomposition.
4. Nutrient cycling – In an ecosystem nutrients are
consumed and recycled back in various forms for
the utilization by various organisms.
THAT’S ALL,
THANK YOU !
