Student
SIU student must be taking a minimum of 4 credit hours
Students taking less than 4 credit hours can purchase a recreational sports
membership
Faculty/Staff & Others
Faculty or staff is eligible to play
Spouse of student or faculty member (Must acquire SIU membership card)
Alumni of department
4. Captain Roles
Ensure team members follow all eligibility requirements
Communicate game time, location, and ID policy
All members have valid SIU ID card
Communicating with officials in respectful manner
Return any rented equipment
Good team sportsmanship
Cooperating with the supervisor on duty concerning protests, incidents or
accidents
5. ID Policy
ALL players must show their SIU ID
card to be eligible to play
If SIU ID card is not shown,
participant will not be able to play
6. Equipment
Jewelry is not allowed
Medical or religious medallions can be taped down
No hats or bandanas
Can wear headbands
Elastic bands to hold wear are permitted
No beads, barrettes, and bobby pins
Knee and ankle braces are permitted
7. Defaults, Forfeits, & Grace Periods
Defaults – An unplayed game without penalty to either team. To receive a
default, the team captain must notify (by e-mail or in person) the Intramural
Sports Office by 4:00 PM on the day of the contest.

Grace Periods – If at least one team member has signed in at game time,
the team will be granted a 10 minute grace period. – At the conclusion of
the grace period, the team shall forfeit the match if they do not have
minimum members present.
8. Protests
Rules protest
If team feels official made a misinterpretation of rules
Captain should see supervisor and get a protest form from competitive sports
office.
Eligibility protest
If player is ineligible and playing then team has right to bring this up to
supervisor and can fill out protest form

10. Postseason Eligibility
The league will consist of a pool play section followed by a postseason
tournament.
Team records, results, and overall sportsmanship rating will be considered
final at noon on the day following the end of the regular season.
Team captains should notify the IM Sports Office of any errors before the
deadline.
Please note that postseason eligibility and inclusion is subject to change
due to unforeseen circumstances (.g. weather, time constraints etc.)

12. The Game
Coin Toss determines which team serves & sides
Team not serving 1st, will serve 1st in second game
Whichever side teams were warming up will start on that side to start game
Teams also switch sides between games
Play best 2 out of 3 games
1st Two games to 25
Win by 2 w/ 27 pt cap
Last game to 15
Win by 2 w/ 17 pt cap
Rally Scoring:
Let Serve = Ball may hit the net and go over ON THE SERVE
Score on every play regardless of team serving
Point and team winning point gets to serve
One time-out per game
13. Playing the Ball
Maximum of 3 contacts
Exception: a block is not considered one of the contacts
Contact is where a player intentionally or accidentally
touches ball
Cannot have contact below waist: dead ball – illegal hit
Cannot use feet or legs to hit ball
Illegal Hit: ball comes visibly to rest or prolonged
contact w/ player
Holding, catching, throwing, rolling, lifting, & pushing
Penalty = point and side out for opposition
14. Playing the Game
Double Hit: player illegally contacts ball twice in succession or ball rebounds from one
body part to another on a single attempt to play ball
Penalty: Point and side out for opposition
Double hit is legal when blocked (legally) and then can contact body part after the block
Exception: On the first contact (after a legal block), the ball may contact a player multiple times during
a single hit attempt.
Simultaneous contact by opponents
The team side that the ball falls, the players have 3 hits to get ball over (simultaneous contact treat as
a block)
If the ball contact the antenna after a joust, a replay shall be declared.
Net Play: ball contacting and crossing net shall remain in play provided contact is in
playing area
Side out for balls that do not go over the net
15. Server
Server must wait for official’s beckon/whistle
Re-serve if they do not wait for beckon/whistle
Side-out on 2nd consecutive serve w/ not beckon/whistle
Any part of foot touches back row line on serve: Fault and pt. for opposition
Serves may hit the net and go over (ball is in play)
Balls that hit net and does not fall in non-serving teams’ court: illegal and
point for non-serving team
Server may not touch end line
Server’s body may be in the air over lines, having left the floor from serving
area
Cannot hit ball with both hands
Cannot step back into court until ball is hit
16. Server
Serves landing on the line or inside court
Ball is in, whole ball has to land outside lines to be out
Server has five seconds to make a legal serve
May toss and catch bad toss, as long as no swinging
motion has been made to attempt serve
Only 1 re-serve for bad toss
17. Net Play
A player shall not contact a ball that is completely on the opponent’s side
of the net unless the contact is a legal block.
A player may block a ball that is completely on the opponent’s side of the net
when:
Attacking team has had its 3 hits.
In the official’s judgment, the attacking team has directed the ball toward
the opponent’s court, as in a spike or drive from the backcourt.
Ball is falling near the net, and no member of the attacking team can make
a play on the ball.
REMEMBER: It is never legal to attack a ball that is completely on the
opponents’ side of the net
18. Co Rec Modifications
A team shall consist of a maximum of three men and three women on the
court. A minimum of two men and two women is required to begin the
game.
If the ball is contacted three times by a team, a woman/male must contact
the ball at least once.
The serving order and positions on the court at service shall be an
alternation of man-woman or vice-versa.
Substitution is on a player-for-player basis (man-for-man, woman-for-
woman), but the two options for substitution are maintained.
