Dean's Welcome
Dear prospective students,
Thank you for your interest in our LL.M. program.
With its long history, rich culture, accomplished scholars,
distinguished alumni, and outstanding students, Renmin Law
School offers an extraordinary environment in which to study
law. As the first institution of higher legal education in the
People's Republic of China, the Law School has made significant
contributions to the development of rule of law in the PRC and to
expanding the boundaries of Chinese legal education.
Since adoption of the reform and opening-up policy in the
1980s, China has witnessed rapid economic growth and played
an increasingly essential role in the international community. In
the context of globalization and regional integration, China has
actively participated in international trade and commerce. Thus,
an increasing number of overseas students and legal professionals
has been seeking proper opportunities to learn about Chinese Law.
With instruction fully in English, the LL.M. Program in Chinese
Law offered by Renmin Law School provides a unique opportunity
for students from abroad, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. All
eligible candidates from different legal systems and professional
backgrounds are welcome. Previous LL.M. Program students have
come from all walks of life: lawyers working in firms, government
officials, senior managers, senior consultants, directors, business
men and women and others. The diversity of the participants in
the LL.M. program has played an active role in the educational
experience of all students at the School.
The teaching faculty in the LL.M.
Program have extraordinary
academic credentials. Most
professors have experience
studying and/or teaching in leading
law schools in the most prestigious
universituties, such as Harvard,
Yale, Oxford and Cambridge. They
all have deep understandings of
both western law and Chinese Law.
At the same time, Renmin Law
School offers valuable internship
opportunities in top law firms and
other institutions for students to
achieve their career planning.
On behalf of Renmin Law School,
I extend a warm welcome to you
and hope for your participation
in our LL.M. Program in Chinese
Law. We will firmly ensure that
your study and experience in
Renmin University of China will
be enjoyable and rewarding. We
sincerely invite you to join us and
become a member of our family!

About Law School
Founded in 1950 and located in Beijing, Renmin University
of China (RUC) remains best known for excellence in the
humanities and social sciences. Renmin Law School stands as
one of RUC's most acclaimed schools. After its founding in
1950, Renmin Law School became the first institution of higher
legal education in the People's Republic of China and, as such,
is dubbed by many as the "cradle" nurturing China's most
outstanding jurists. Leading the Law School's list of many honors
is the 1998 National May First Labor Merit Award, which was
the first such award granted by the Ministry of Education to an
institution of higher learning.
Renmin Law School inherited the vaunted tradition of the
former Chaoyang University when the two schools merged
shortly after the founding of the PRC. Established in 1912,
Chaoyang University became so synonymous with legal
practice in China that the saying went, "no Chaoyang, no
courts." Chaoyang University's legacy of producing nationally
recognized jurists endures in the Renmin Law School of today,
where students and faculty continue to lead the development of
China's legal system.
Since 1950, more than 20,000 students have graduated from Renmin
Law School, while more than 300,000 jurists have received training
from the Law School as continuing education students, judges,
procurators, lawyers, university faculty members, and civil servants.
A significant number of alumni
have become leaders in advancing
China's rule of law development
as government officials, judges,
academics, and public interest and
corporate lawyers.
At present, Renmin Law School
educates more than 3,000 students
annually, with graduate students
accounting for approximately
80% of the student body. The Law
School confers undergraduate
(LL.B.) and graduate degrees
(J.M. and LL.M.) in all secondary
disciplines of law, including one
national first-level key discipline
and four national second level key
disciplines. Renmin Law School
also offers a Bachelor's Degree
in Law with a concentration in
Intellectual Property Rights.
Authorized by the State Council of
China, the Law School established
the nation's first post-doctoral
research center covering all
doctoral subject areas.
R e n m i n L a w S c h o o l ' s 4 3
research institutes carry out
numerous projects of national
and international importance.
3
These research institutes include
two Ministry of Educations
sponsored humanities and social
science research centers, the
Research Center for Criminal
Jurisprudence, the Research
Center of Civil & Commercial
Jurisprudence, and the RUC
Center for Disabled Persons' Law
& Legal Services. Renmin Law
School's expansive library houses
more than 300,000 volumes,
including over 50,000 foreign
language sources.
There are over 1,300 Chinese
and 3,000 foreign law journals
available to students, faculty
and visiting scholars. Renmin
Law School edits and publishes
the nation's leading law journal,
the "Jurists' Review," as well as
the "RUC Law Review" and
the "Chaoyang Law Review."
The Law School also publishes
an internationally distributed
English law journal, "Frontiers of
Law in China," which connects
an English readership with the
swiftly-shifting trends that define
China's contemporary legal
landscape. In efforts to make our
scholarship more readily available
to an increasingly internet-based society, the Law School
runs a nationally recognized website entitled "China Civil &
Commercial Law."
Endowed with many of legal academia's leading minds, Renmin
Law School faculty members include not only influential
senior jurists recognized at home and abroad, but also a host of
younger academics actively advancing the boundaries of legal
research and pedagogy. As part of the Law School's ongoing
commitment to serving the public good, our professors have
advised the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the
Communist Party of China and the National People's Congress
Standing Committee. Scores of other faculty members lead
students in legislative redrafting and public interest work.
Over the past six decades, Renmin Law School has made lasting
contributions to the development of legal education and rule of
law in China. Renmin Law School prepares students not only to
master the minutiae of the law, but also to lead as global citizens
ready and able to tackle some of the world's most challenging
problems.
With an ethos of service and academic rigor underpinning the
work of our dedicated administration, faculty, staff and student
body, Renmin Law School continues forward as a first-class
legal center gaining recognition around the globe.

Quote from Program Participants
Studying Law at the RUC is a very unique study experience. Not only do we
learn about Chinese legal practice, Chinese legal codes, we also explore in
much detail Chinese politics, philosophy and history. All teachers are highly
professional and encourage in class debates. Given that all LL.M. Program
participants come from different parts of the world we also learn from each
other. Moreover, the fact that we live in China means that everyday we get to see
the application of our new knowledge, whether it is in a newspaper article, on
a TV programme or in a conversation with Chinese friends. So far, I have been
very happy with my time at the RUC, the course is very versatile and manages to
cover a lot of aspects of Chinese Law in a short period of time.
The LL.M. Program in Chinese Law has provided me with an opportunity to
understand in details about the rules governing civil relations in China from
a perspective I could not obtain from any other way, and it has allowed for
an expanding network of professional friends in the Asia Pacific Regions and
United States. This is a special place where the administration and scholars
are open to new ideas and ready to embrace new challenges. Inspired from
the professors in the program, now I'm working on co-authorship of a book
with family law attorney LI Dan of DeBund Law Firm in Shanghai, on Chinese
Marriage and Divorce. I may continue my studies by obtaining a Jurist
Doctorate or Doctoral Degree with a focus on International Business later.
Doing an LL.M.? Of course! But where? Why not in China? As one of the new
leading world economics China's legal systems grows more important every
day. Doing a LL.M. here at Renmin University of China is not only a huge
benefit professionally speaking; in addition to graduate from the most famous
Chinese law schools you will experience the vibrant and intriguing Chinese
capital Beijing and get many international and Chinese contacts. Studying at
Renmin University also allows you to learn or progress in Chinese, live at a very
international campus and graduate from a very renowned law school.

The Master's program has a well-designed curriculum that is tailored to the
needs of foreign lawyers and is comprehensive enough to cover every field
and aspect of Chinese law that foreign lawyers need to understand in order to
provide competent legal advice. Aside from Chinese law courses, students are
provided a wide selection of international commercial law elective courses,
thereby offering students a well-rounded legal education. Classes are taught
by distinguished professors who had obtained graduate/post graduate degrees
from renowned universities abroad and are renowned authorities in their own
respective fields. With its excellent professors, well-designed curriculum and
state of the art facilities, Renmin Law School is indeed the Best Law School in
China.
I chose to study law at Renmin University because I want to comprehensively
and perceptively study the legal spirit and legal system of China, in particular its
business law. I find Renmin's LLM Program is conscientiously designed to meet
the demand of promising legal practitioners. Besides, the courses are taught by
eloquent, erudite professors. Sophisticated learning environment and amiable
friends benefit international students to reach their goals in life. Studying law at
China's best law school is indeed a lifetime experience!
The Master's program in Chinese Law in English at Renmin has provided me
with an opportunity to understand me what is law and I have very good fortune
to do my master. In the best law school in the country. I am very impressed
with the program of Chinese law. The professors are all very knowledgeable on
the course subject, and they are very Generous and happy us understand the
concepts. I am very thankful to Law school Dean, Teachers and all cooperative
staff. This opportunity also provide me an experiencing an international
education. Being a country with many students from different culture and
nationalities, China and Renmin university is a perfect choice for me. I can
meet different kind of people who will give me different points of views, which
will be both valuable and enriching in my education. This will also improve my
ability to learn Chinese language skills while learning about legal system here. I
believe that LLM programmed will beneficial for me and I hope to utilize these
skills for my future career in Law.

  • 1.
  • 2. 1 Dean's Welcome Dear prospective students, Thank you for your interest in our LL.M. program. With its long history, rich culture, accomplished scholars, distinguished alumni, and outstanding students, Renmin Law School offers an extraordinary environment in which to study law. As the first institution of higher legal education in the People's Republic of China, the Law School has made significant contributions to the development of rule of law in the PRC and to expanding the boundaries of Chinese legal education. Since adoption of the reform and opening-up policy in the 1980s, China has witnessed rapid economic growth and played an increasingly essential role in the international community. In the context of globalization and regional integration, China has actively participated in international trade and commerce. Thus, an increasing number of overseas students and legal professionals has been seeking proper opportunities to learn about Chinese Law. With instruction fully in English, the LL.M. Program in Chinese Law offered by Renmin Law School provides a unique opportunity for students from abroad, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. All eligible candidates from different legal systems and professional backgrounds are welcome. Previous LL.M. Program students have come from all walks of life: lawyers working in firms, government officials, senior managers, senior consultants, directors, business men and women and others. The diversity of the participants in the LL.M. program has played an active role in the educational experience of all students at the School. The teaching faculty in the LL.M. Program have extraordinary academic credentials. Most professors have experience studying and/or teaching in leading law schools in the most prestigious universituties, such as Harvard, Yale, Oxford and Cambridge. They all have deep understandings of both western law and Chinese Law. At the same time, Renmin Law School offers valuable internship opportunities in top law firms and other institutions for students to achieve their career planning. • 3. 2 About Law School Founded in 1950 and located in Beijing, Renmin University of China (RUC) remains best known for excellence in the humanities and social sciences. Renmin Law School stands as one of RUC's most acclaimed schools. After its founding in 1950, Renmin Law School became the first institution of higher legal education in the People's Republic of China and, as such, is dubbed by many as the "cradle" nurturing China's most outstanding jurists. Leading the Law School's list of many honors is the 1998 National May First Labor Merit Award, which was the first such award granted by the Ministry of Education to an institution of higher learning. Renmin Law School inherited the vaunted tradition of the former Chaoyang University when the two schools merged shortly after the founding of the PRC. Established in 1912, Chaoyang University became so synonymous with legal practice in China that the saying went, "no Chaoyang, no courts." Chaoyang University's legacy of producing nationally recognized jurists endures in the Renmin Law School of today, where students and faculty continue to lead the development of China's legal system. Since 1950, more than 20,000 students have graduated from Renmin Law School, while more than 300,000 jurists have received training from the Law School as continuing education students, judges, procurators, lawyers, university faculty members, and civil servants. A significant number of alumni have become leaders in advancing China's rule of law development as government officials, judges, academics, and public interest and corporate lawyers. At present, Renmin Law School educates more than 3,000 students annually, with graduate students accounting for approximately 80% of the student body. The Law School confers undergraduate (LL.B.) and graduate degrees (J.M. and LL.M.) in all secondary disciplines of law, including one national first-level key discipline and four national second level key disciplines. Renmin Law School also offers a Bachelor's Degree in Law with a concentration in Intellectual Property Rights. Authorized by the State Council of China, the Law School established the nation's first post-doctoral research center covering all doctoral subject areas. R e n m i n L a w S c h o o l ' s 4 3 research institutes carry out numerous projects of national and international importance.
  • 4. 3 These research institutes include two Ministry of Educations sponsored humanities and social science research centers, the Research Center for Criminal Jurisprudence, the Research Center of Civil & Commercial Jurisprudence, and the RUC Center for Disabled Persons' Law & Legal Services. Renmin Law School's expansive library houses more than 300,000 volumes, including over 50,000 foreign language sources. There are over 1,300 Chinese and 3,000 foreign law journals available to students, faculty and visiting scholars. Renmin Law School edits and publishes the nation's leading law journal, the "Jurists' Review," as well as the "RUC Law Review" and the "Chaoyang Law Review." The Law School also publishes an internationally distributed English law journal, "Frontiers of Law in China," which connects an English readership with the swiftly-shifting trends that define China's contemporary legal landscape. In efforts to make our scholarship more readily available to an increasingly internet-based society, the Law School runs a nationally recognized website entitled "China Civil & Commercial Law." Endowed with many of legal academia's leading minds, Renmin Law School faculty members include not only influential senior jurists recognized at home and abroad, but also a host of younger academics actively advancing the boundaries of legal research and pedagogy. As part of the Law School's ongoing commitment to serving the public good, our professors have advised the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the National People's Congress Standing Committee. Scores of other faculty members lead students in legislative redrafting and public interest work. Over the past six decades, Renmin Law School has made lasting contributions to the development of legal education and rule of law in China. Renmin Law School prepares students not only to master the minutiae of the law, but also to lead as global citizens ready and able to tackle some of the world's most challenging problems. With an ethos of service and academic rigor underpinning the work of our dedicated administration, faculty, staff and student body, Renmin Law School continues forward as a first-class legal center gaining recognition around the globe.

  • 13. Quote from Program Participants Studying Law at the RUC is a very unique study experience. Not only do we learn about Chinese legal practice, Chinese legal codes, we also explore in much detail Chinese politics, philosophy and history. All teachers are highly professional and encourage in class debates. Given that all LL.M. Program participants come from different parts of the world we also learn from each other. Moreover, the fact that we live in China means that everyday we get to see the application of our new knowledge, whether it is in a newspaper article, on a TV programme or in a conversation with Chinese friends. So far, I have been very happy with my time at the RUC, the course is very versatile and manages to cover a lot of aspects of Chinese Law in a short period of time. The LL.M. Program in Chinese Law has provided me with an opportunity to understand in details about the rules governing civil relations in China from a perspective I could not obtain from any other way, and it has allowed for an expanding network of professional friends in the Asia Pacific Regions and United States. This is a special place where the administration and scholars are open to new ideas and ready to embrace new challenges. Inspired from the professors in the program, now I'm working on co-authorship of a book with family law attorney LI Dan of DeBund Law Firm in Shanghai, on Chinese Marriage and Divorce. I may continue my studies by obtaining a Jurist Doctorate or Doctoral Degree with a focus on International Business later. Doing an LL.M.? Of course! But where? Why not in China? As one of the new leading world economics China's legal systems grows more important every day. Doing a LL.M. here at Renmin University of China is not only a huge benefit professionally speaking; in addition to graduate from the most famous Chinese law schools you will experience the vibrant and intriguing Chinese capital Beijing and get many international and Chinese contacts. Studying at Renmin University also allows you to learn or progress in Chinese, live at a very international campus and graduate from a very renowned law school.
