The U.S. Postal Service announced it will stop delivering mail on Saturdays starting in August 2013 in an attempt to save $2 billion annually. Package and express mail delivery will still occur six days a week, but regular mail will no longer be delivered to homes and businesses on Saturdays. This change is a response to declining letter volumes and rising costs as people increasingly use electronic communication instead of mailed letters. It also aims to reduce costs associated with funding retirement health benefits for employees. While controversial, the Postal Service says the move reflects the growth in package delivery versus letters given changing customer mailing habits in recent years.

Can’t The U.S. Postal Service
Raise Money?
The U.S. Postal Service faces other
limitations. For instance, it is prohibited
from setting up retail outlets, for example,
that could generate huge profits to help
offset delivery costs. Even more damaging, it
is barred by Congress from charging the full
cost of providing the service it is required

Congress may soon be more open to approve
reduced service for first-class mail from six

spending. It should be noted that the U.S.
Postal Service does not receive tax money to
facilitate its day-to-day operations.
