Brazil hosted the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, also known as Rio+20, from June 12-23, 2012 in Rio de Janeiro. The conference aimed to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress and implementation gaps in meeting previously agreed commitments, and address new and emerging challenges. Over 50,000 participants from governments, the UN system and other international organizations, civil society, indigenous people, local authorities, businesses and scientists came together to shape how we can reduce poverty, advance social equity and ensure environmental protection on an ever more crowded planet to get to the future we want.
