3. Introduction:
• This present study is aimed at explaining the mood realization
of the learning activities in the grade VII English textbook
published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. It is
designed within the framework of qualitative research and the
method is discourse analysis. The result shows that the learning
activities give more imperative mood than the others.
• Afterwards, speaking skill is included more than the other
skills. To achieve communicative activity, the good balance
between indicative and imperative mood should be realized in
the process of teaching and learning English.
4. Introduction:
• Language is supposed to be an important instrument for
continuing life of human beings in the world. With
language they can understand each other of what they
want or they do. Naturally, the language always exists
together with human beings. Murcia and Olshtain (2000:3)
state that through language people communicate
information, ideas, beliefs, emotion, and attitudes to one
another. In other words, where human beings are, there
must be a language. That is why language is the only
instrument for them for communication. It means that they
will know each other by means of language.
5. Cont........
• Systemic functional linguistics (SFL) views language as a
resource for making meaning. It describes language in actual
use and focus on texts and their contexts (Gerrot and Wignell,
1995:6).
• Based on the perspective of systemic functional linguistics, it is
known when someone communicates, he or she creates text.
The text which is created occurs in a certain context.
• With regard to the present study, it is aimed at explaining how
mood of the discourse of the learning activities in English
textbook realized. Through analysing the discourse, the readers
can understand not only the information but also the meaning
beyond the clauses (Halliday&Matthiessen, 2004:176).
6. Methodology:
• The concern of the present study isto explain how the mood realized
on the models of activity found in grade VII English textbook.
• The source of data in the present study is the learning activities in the
grade VII English textbook entitled “When English Rings a Bell”
published by the Ministry of Education and Culture which consist of 166
learning activities from all chapters (Chapter 1– 11).
• The results were analyzed through the use of interpersonal meaning
which focused on mood analysis. The instrument of data collection was
Systemic Functional Linguistics on discourse analysis of mood of the
learning activities in the grade VII English textbook published by the
Ministry of Education and Culture.
7. Cont.....
• The purpose of this research is the realization of
mood, the finding of four language skills, and contribution
of the study for English teachers.
8. Realization of mood:
• The learning activities in the English textbook give more
imperative than the others. Polar interrogative (yes/no) is
only 1%, Declarative is realised by 12%, and Interrogative
(Wh-content) is realised by 9%. Furthermore, by
comparing to the number of Polar interrogative (yes/no),
declarative, and Interrogative (Wh-content) it could be
inferred that the learning activities mostly concern in
imperative which is realised by 78%. In other words, the
activities are given more in the form of command than in
the form of question and statement.
9. CONCLUSION:
• To achieve communicative activity, the good balance
between indicative and imperative mood should be
realized in the process of teaching and learning English.
Although teacher has a powerful authority and that is
natural since teacher is the leader in the classroom, the
process of giving and demanding information between
teacher and students could be realized to achieve
communicative activity.
11. Introduction ( Advertisement)
• Wright (1983:8) defines advertising as “a powerful
communication force and a vital marketing tool helping to
sell goods and services, image and ideas….
• Similarly, Roderick (1980:4) defines advertising as “a
message specified by its originator, carried by a
communication system and intended to influence and/or
inform an unknown audience”.
12. Cont.....
• Advertisements can be classified into non-commercials
and commercials on the basis of the object and purpose
involved in advertising.
• In non-commercial advertisements, selling and buying
are not involved and certain ideas, morals or appeals are
communicated to the common public from government
agencies or various associations and societies. The
purpose may be related to charity, political propaganda, or
different social welfare measures. This is the category we
can classify as political advertisements
13. Data Analysis
• The data for analysis are presidential advertisements of
two political parties that contested in 2011 general
election in Nigeria. The political adverts are taken from
three Nigerian newspapers- The Tribune, The Nation
and The Punch- between November 2010 and April
2011.
• . The two political parties are Peoples‟ Democratic Party
(PDP) and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
• 4 advertisement taken by each party.

20. Critical analysis:
• In this article researcher did not mention the predicate as
residue in the advertisement of 1st party ACN.In
Imperative clauses researcher simply describe the Finite
part and predicate part as mood block
21. Mood and Modality in Christian Magazines:
• This paper is an investigation into the nature of
propositions made in religious magazines from the
perspective of Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG).
• Magazines and tracts are other means of preaching the
gospel of Christ, in the modern day rather than the
conventional church sermons
• In fact, articles in magazines and tracts can simply be
referred to as written sermons because they are written to
get people persuaded about Christian life styles.
22. Cont....
• Articles in Christian magazines, just like sermons are
pervaded by some strong ideological features which are
intended to influence the readers in order to get them
convinced and persuaded about the subject matter of the
articles.
• These ideological features are inherent in the
grammatical choices employed by the writers. Hence, it is
worthwhile to carry out an analysis of the nature of
propositions made by the writers to get the readers
persuaded, from a grammatical point of view.
23. Purpose of Study
• The main purpose of this study is to examine how
interpersonal relationship is created by analyzing the
nature of propositions made by the writer of Christian
magazines; how valid are the propositions/proposals and
how the readers are represented in the magazine through
the system of mood and modality. Thus, the study is
purely interpersonal metafunction analysis within the
purview of System Functional Grammar.
24. Data Analysis:
• In all the six editions of the magazines, 194 ranking clauses were analyzed for mood
and the result reveals that 85% of the clauses are in declarative mood, 11.3% are in
imperative mood, while 3.6% are in interrogative mood.
• The dominance of declarative mood in our analysis indicates that the writer’s chief
concern in the articles is to offer the readers some information convincing enough
to get the readers persuaded.
• The mood choices of the writer in each edition have helped to achieve the purpose
of the texts which is to convince and persuade.
• The texts are structured in a way that the clauses with declarative mood are
assigned varying degrees of speech functions which all hang together to achieve a
persuasive text.
25. Declarative Clauses:
i. One of the most awesome nature and characteristics of
God is His faithfulness.
ii. He never lies and never fails to fulfill His promises
iii. God is also faithful to those who put their trust in Him.
iv. He sheds His blood on the cross of Calvary to pay the
ransom for your soul.
• Declarative Mood is used by the writer to offer convincing
information on the nature, characteristics and infinite love
of God
26. Interrogative Clauses:
• i. How will you repay the huge sacrifice? (April Edition)
• ii. Have you ever wondered whyGod did not send angels
to die for you and whole humanity? (April Edition)
• iii. Will you allow His death to be in vain in your life (April
Edition)
• iv. Now, how do you rest God’s presence (January
Edition)
• v. What other assurance do you need? (February Edition)
• vi. Is this your main reason for living? (February Edition)
27. Imperative Clauses:
• i. You must also not procrastinate when it comes to sharing the
gospel with the lost (March Edition)
• ii. Determine as an individual, to make your life count (January
Edition)
• iii.Renew your life at the end of each day (June Edition)
• iv. Surrender your life to Jesus if you haven’t done so (June
Edition)
• v. Forget the past (June Edition)
• vi. Forget your shortcomings and failures of the past years.
• vii. The husband and wife must each obey these instructions, if
their marriage is to grow.
28. Cont.....
• In the above imperative clauses ,though lexico-
grammatically looks like a command but in the context of
text these clauses shows that writer has not any authority
to give orders. These clauses function as a advice and
persuade the reader to change their attitude.
29. Conclusion:
• Religious articles are full of propositions which are
geared towards achieving a purpose, mostly, to persuade
the readers to accept their ideology. To present their
argument convincingly, some grammatical choices are
employed and some grammatical features are
manipulated.
• This study has revealed that most articles in Christian
magazines are motivational and persuasive in nature. The
mood structure of most Christian writings are manipulated
to give varying degrees of speech functions
(“propositions” and “proposals”) convincing enough to get
the readers persuaded.
