FLOOR
 Structural component made to provide a level surface.
 It is a horizontal sanitary surface that supports the occupants
of a building, furniture and equipment.
STRUCTURE OF A FLOOR
The floor is divided into three components
1. Sub base
2. Base concrete
3. Floor finish
Properties to be considered in
selection of flooring material:
 Cleanliness
 Resistance
 Durability
 Hardness
 Maintenance
Cleanliness:
 The flooring should be capable of being cleaned easily, and it should
be non-absorbent.
Resistance:
 Should have effective resistance against absorption of oil, grease etc.
Durability :
 The flooring should have sufficient resistance to wear, temperature
changes, disintegration with time and decay.
 Tiles, marble, terrazzo, concrete, mosaic etc. are considered to be of best
types.
SELECTION OF FLOORING MATERIAL
Hardness:
 It should be sufficiently hard to resist indentation marks, imprints etc.
likely to be caused by shifting of furniture, equipment etc.
Maintenance:
 Flooring material should require least maintenance, repairs can be
done easily.
 Tiles, marble, terrazzo, concrete etc. require less maintenance.
SELECTION OF FLOORING MATERIAL
TYPES OF FLOORING
•CARPETS AND RUGS
•VINYL FLOORING
•WOODEN FLOORING
•STONE FLOORING
•BRICK FLOORING
•GLASS FLOORING
BRICK FLOORING
 FLOOR THAT HAS BRICK /BRICK TILE AS ITS
COVERING.
 THE FLOORING IS DONE WITH LAYING
BRICKS DOWN IN A BED OF MORTAR AND
ARRANGED IN A PATTERN.
 COMMONLY USED IN ALLUVIAL PLACES,
WHERE STONE IS SCARCE AND WELL
BURNT BRICKS OF GOOD QUALITY ARE
READILY AVAILABLE.
BRICK FLOORING
 Such a flooring is used in cheap construction, specially where good bricks are available.
 This flooring is specially suited to ware-houses, stores, go-downs etc.
 Well-burnt bricks of good colour and uniform shapes are used
.
 Bricks are laid either or flat or on edge, arranged in herring bone fashion or set at right
angles to the walls, or set any other good looking pattern.

CHARACTERISTICS:
Thelow maintenance requirements of brickflooring makeit
verypopular in kitchens.
Durability: Brickis one of the hardest and most durable
flooring materials available. It requires little tono
maintenance, and an installation can last for years
This picturemakesit clearthat brick flooring is not confined to
squares and rectangles.
Thetile is set insuch a way that whenit is installed it is very
difficult to detect a repeating pattern inthe surface.

Other
properties:
 Colour
 Texture
 Heat
 Slip Resistant
 Hardness
 Replacement
 Weight
• Bricks are available in a range of
thicknesses,40mm to 100mm.
• For domestic use ,the 50mm -60mm
units are suitable.
• Road construction -80 mm thick units.
• Airports, ports and freight yard-100mm
thick units.
SIZES:
METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION:
 The earth filling is properlyconsolidated.
 10cm thick layer ofdryclean sandis evenly laid.
 10cm thick layer ofLIMECONCRETE (1:4:8) or LEAN CEMENTCONCRETE (1:8:16) is laid,
compacted and cured toform abase concrete.
 Well soaked bricks arelaid in CEMENTMORTAR (1:4) in any desired bond pattern e.g.
Herring Bond, DiagonalBond orany other suitable bond.
 In case the pointing is nottobe done , the thickness ofjoints should not exceed 2mm and
the mortarin joints is struck off flush with atrowel.
 In case the pointing is tobe done, the minimum thickness ofjoints is kept 6mm andthe
pointing maybe done as specified.
METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION
ADVANTAGES:
There are various reasons for the benefits that brick flooring products provide
in visual terms, their strength and ability and their practical purposes. Here are
some of the benefits of what brick flooring will provide when used as paving:
 They provide elegance and character
with the old world look rustic charm
 They are fade resistant
 They resist wear and tear
 They are slip resistant
 They are recycled products, so you
are helping the environment
 They are very durable with long
lasting attributes
 They are fire resistant
 They are maintenance free
 They will not crack or chip
APPLICATIONS:
 Primarily used for architectural
purposes. But, now used in
commercial complexes, parking area
and community centres. These pavers
are offered in various designs and
sizes.
DEFECTS:
Cracks can occur as defect in brickwork, that can occur in due to:
• Ground movement
• Accident
• Thermal movement
• Brick Rot
APPLICATION:
MERITS AND DEMERITS
MERITS:
 Cheaper than Cement
concrete, wooden, mosaic
flooring.
 Provides a non slippery and
fire resistant surface.
 Easily repairable.
 Tough ,durable and
sufficiently hard.
 Easy in maintenance.
 Easy to construct.
DEMERITS:
• Slightly Uneven when
laid.
• The resulting surface
is not smooth and is
rough.
• Water absorbent.
• Installation requires
use of toxic materials.
