2. The interest for the relative problem of immigrant women it came from the
voluntary action that I do within the SOS Razzismo Italia Asssociation. The
cultural and sensitization initiatives that are implemented not only within the
Association with the auto-help group of immigrant women but also in schools,
workplaces and in the squares events made me want to deepen the
immigration issue. In attendance, as a volunteer, at the reunions of mutual
help group of the Association, made by immigrant women that come from
Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe, I had the opportunity to
observe their desire of belonging to the group and the issues faced by them
determined my choice. I deepened, therefore, through in-depth interviews
about the issue of immigrant women.
senza nessuno.
•What was the primary need that pushed you to participate in
this self help group?
After the separation with my italian husband I was alone and with
my only son of 11 years, in a
foreigncountry without anyone. I had begun to fall into depression
because my life, already hard, had worsened considerably. And there
was no firend that could give me a hand to move on. When I came
here, at the Association, I did it because I needed orientation, I was
searching an occupation even voluntary.
Qui in Italia
In Colombia I was a saleswoman of precious stones, a job that I liked very much and
which allowed me to be economically stable. Here in Italy I was a shop assistentat my
husband store, but when we broke up, or rather when he left me, I also lost my job.
Then, after months of confusion that were taking me on wrong paths, I met other
immigrant women like me who had similar problems , I began to attend them, and
together it seemed that everything was easier, I could, initially, not think about my
everyday issues, even my relationship with Juan, my son, improved. So I decided to
attend systematically the group of women here in Via Catania.
5. 2. Quale risultato hai conseguito?
•What outcome did you achieve?
•Initially, I was a bit tied up, I didn’t speak much and did not say everything, in short I picked
things to say and not to say, then slowly I had no problem talking about my problems, my needs
and my expectations.
There have been times when everything seemed useless, every effort did not give the hoped-for
result. In some other days there have been misunderstandings because we come from so many
different cultures of each other.
I found myself in very good company since the beginning, and everyone seemed to me very nice
and above all very solidal with the problems of others. The problems of daily racism went away
or better I managed to handle them because I felt stronger.
I can say that it was very good for me to attend the group because I was able to regain the
strength I had lost withthe separation from my companion.
come i nostri smeraldi.
•Do you, therefore, consider it a positive, negative or uninteresting experience?
Currently I could, with the help of the association to find a job jewelery. I know quite
good the precious stones and how they are made, so I hope I can do here the same
job as I did back home in Colombia, maybe importing our precious stones .... Which
are among the best ... like our emeralds.
This strength to start againit was given by the group. Thanks to my group companions
now I also have friends who know me and trust me.
7. Liana Popescu -Romania
•What was the primary need that pushed you to participate in this self help
group?
I kept asking myself whydid I come to Italy and why did I left my country, where I had
a job, that was not paying much but I was honored and respected, then to come here
and be abused and discriminated by everyone, to work at a job that is not for me, like
that of the caretaker, and to be too often rejected because of my nationality. When I
arrivedhere I did not realize how people were talking to me because I did not
understand Italian very well, their looks were not calm and cozy but I thought I was
wrong. But then after I learned the language better, I started to understand the jokes
about romanians.
They call us ROM(gypsies), but not all the romanians are ROM, we are romanian
citizens, and the ROM live in Romania but there are plenty of differences. But
thensince all those home robberies in Northern Italywhere the criminals were
romanian things got worse, I felt really rejected. My wish was just to leave, to return
to my country. In fact, I went back to Romania but the job I left voluntarily was no
longer available to me so, with regrets, I returned In Italy but not to Padua as it was
the first time, but here in Rome. I have been a guest of a relative who is a cultural
mediator and thanks to her I have also found this group of mutual help that has
helped me not only to enter this new and big city but also to find friends, yes,
because I consider the other women in the group my friends.
9. 2. Quale risultato hai conseguito?
saper riconoscere i delinquenti dai lavoratori e stare attenti, magari cacciando i criminali. Noi
in Italia. •What outcome did you achieve?
Well first of all I managed to stay, instead of getting away again. Then, thanks to them today, I
can deal with all the negative judgments of people, that when they understand that I’m
romanian, they find something negative to say. But today I have the strength to answer
because I have nothing to hide, I came to improve my job position and not to do something
bad, so I explain that not all romanians are bad and delinquents, there are people like me
who want to just work, fit in with the rules of Italian society. We are accustomed to
respecting the rules is not difficult for our culture, that's what we have always done. There
are good people in all countries and bad people, people who work and people stealing, you
just have to know how to recognize the criminals from workers and being careful, maybe oust
the criminals. We ourselves are hurt by the negative image that some of our fellow
countrymen are causing here in Italy.
•Do you, therefore, consider it a positive, negative or uninteresting
experience?
For me it is a vital experience, an experience that has helped me to
accept my own nationality, which has helped me to deal with people and
new areas of work. I accepted the caretaker job that I did not know and
now I even do piano lessons because with music I can forget all the
negative aspects and the women in the group are happy because I often
play the piano for them as well.
