2. Introduction
After attending the University of South Alabama for business
management study, Lee Olander founded Midtown Mortgage Inc. in
Mobile, Alabama. Lee Olander is a member and volunteer of Ducks
Unlimited (DU).
In 1937, an organization called More Game Birds in America
transformed into what would become the world’s largest waterfowl
and wetland habitat conservation group. Now known as DU, the
group’s foundation has always been based on biology, and it funds
hundreds of scientific studies to research the optimal living condition
for native game birds. DU has adopted a strategy of continual
observation and ongoing improvement of its programs.
Grassland restoration is one DU initiative. All types of waterfowl
instinctively nest in the grassy sections near water, since this allows
the females protection while guarding their eggs and hatching their
young. DU is working to restore this habitat to increase the game bird
population. While much has been learned about waterfowl habitat,
more research is needed to preserve waterfowl populations for future
generations.
