HELLO, SUMMER!
It’s June! Can you believe how fast this year is going?
It has been flying by for me and I’m sure a lot of you feel the same.
I’m always working two months ahead on High Desert Living and
as I’m sitting here writing this, it’s not exactly a warm day in April.
It’s fun to anticipate life two months ahead and looking forward to
summer officially beginning, makes me smile. Before moving up
to Bend, every day felt like the perfect summer day. I was blessed
to live in a beautiful beach town but definitely wouldn’t trade the
seasonality of Central Oregon after living here. Summer is always
the season to look forward to and, without a doubt, the first day
of summer is celebrated with a barbecue. It’s also my husband’s
birthday, so two reasons to celebrate for us.
Another reason to celebrate this month is for all the wonderful
fathers in Tetherow. Happy Father’s Day to you all!
As we celebrate the season, let us also give thanks to the amaz-
ing business partners who make this publication possible each

How do you take a comfort meal like
spaghetti and make it gluten-free,
plant-based, and absolutely deli-
cious?! This is one of our favorite
meals and is filling and chock full of
nutritious goodies!
First, saute’ zoodles (zucchini noo-
dles), onion, mushrooms, and garlic.
You can also add spaghetti squash?!
Then, add in Beyond Beef crumbles
and lentils. This adds some protein
and fiber.
After all of that is cooked, mix in
spaghetti sauce (the Simply Ragu is
pretty tasty!) and any seasonings you
like (oregano, basil, Italian season-
ing, etc.).
Once everything is cooked and you
are ready to eat, serve in a bowl and
top with nutritional yeast for B12

Meet High Desert Living’s business sponsor, Kristine
Cooper, of Cooper Art and Abode. Graduating
with a fine arts degree in 2016 from Seattle Pacific
University, Kristine enjoys pushing boundaries and
challenging the way elements pull together with
vibrant acrylic paints, charcoals, and varying mixed
media. Her use of bold colors and modern textiles
have captured the aesthetic eye and are shining in
beautiful spaces of several Tetherow homes.
Kristine’s artwork is inspired by Bend. “It is a direct
reflection of how I feel when I explore the place we
live. Sunsets at Sparks Lake, the winding trails at
Smith Rock, and the vast beauty found here create
the inspiration for my palette. My artwork is a
perfect complement to a Tetherow home, breathing
life into the neutral palette. The Tetherow home
community is known for its tasteful, neutral, and
timeless finishes. My artwork adds the warmth of
Central Oregon into the space.”

economy and culture. “In a time like 2021, it’s more
important than ever that we pick out items for our
home that are made locally and made intentionally.
When I have a client with a specific vision for their
home, I create a commission. The commissions have
been a great fit for many in the Tetherow commu-
nity. It has been such a fun and unique experience
building a design with a client. I start with something
that they’re passionate about and complement it
with their personal taste. This process also gives us
the flexibility to make the painting the exact size that
would look best based on the size of the wall. The
commission process is special, becoming an heir-
loom piece that fits perfectly in the home.”

Marianne Cox
THE HERO BEHIND STREET DOG HERO
Marianne founded Street Dog Hero four years ago, following her
long-held aspiration of saving a street dog in January 2017. “Back
in 2000 after college (Go, Beavs!), my husband and I went to
Mexico for our very first time and that is when I saw street dogs
for the first time. That trip I lost sleep as all I could think about
were dogs running down the roads, dogs begging for food, dogs
looking so thin and begging for love and attention. After every
meal, I grabbed our scraps and made sure to feed every dog I saw.
From that moment on, for 17 years, I told my husband I wanted to
save just one of those street dogs. In those 17 years, we married,
got corporate jobs in Portland, moved to Bend, opened a little bar
named JC’s, founded 10 Barrel Brewing Company, raised a family
and enjoyed all that Bend has to offer.”
“2017 is when I decided to stop dreaming it and do some-
thing.” Once Street Dog Hero was created, Marianne did a lot of
research. She had never worked in animal welfare, never rescued
a dog besides pulling over and calling owners of lost dogs, and
only volunteered walking dogs at the local humane society with
her kids. She also knew little about non-profits, boards, raising
money or how rescues worked, and had never flown a dog on a
plane before. Yet, in 2 months she received her 501c3 determina-
tion letter from the State of Oregon and it was official. “It was that
spring break, March 2017, my family traveled to Sayulita, Mexico,
and there I spent my days talking and meeting rescues. I clicked
with one immediately, met my first rescued street dog, and flew
it home with me on April 1, 2017.” That was dog number one. Fast
forward to today –Street Dog Hero has rescued and rehomed over
1,400 dogs from around the world and placed them in loving homes
throughout the PNW and across the United States!
Marianne grew up as an Airforce kid, spending most of her time
on the east coast, moving every three years until her father

retired in Oregon when she was in high school. The Cox family
were one of the first lots sold in Tetherow back in 2009, but
didn’t build and move in until 2015. They lived there for three
years and now live in the Highlands with husband Chris, Bella
(eighth grade), and Colton (sixth grade). They have three dogs –
one is a SDH dog from South Korea, Frank, and two labradoodles
from before Street Dog Hero days. They also have one cat who
thinks he’s a dog. “I pinch myself every day at what one person’s
dream can accomplish. I not only save street dogs from around
the world, but also dogs from meat farms in Asia. I have saved
hundreds of dogs from kill shelters throughout California and
Texas. What I am most proud of is holding free spay and neu-
ter clinics in communities that need them most. We hold free
pop-up spay and neuter clinics throughout Mexico and rural
communities in Oregon. We have done clinics in both La Pine and
Christmas Valley and hope to expand to Madras and maybe one
day, Warm Springs.”
Marianne’s inspiration hasn’t come from anyone in particular but
instead from the dogs she sees who have no one. “It’s inspired me
to be their voice. I’m inspired to help educate and raise awareness
of the lives these dogs face. I’m inspired to give them hope.” With
so many people helping her and Street Dog Hero along the way,
Marianne “feels blessed to have an AMAZING group of volun-
teers who believe in me; making Street Dog Hero what it is today.

You spend hours getting your pots and beds planted just right,
with an abundance of your favorite lush green and colorful
plants. Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy your hard work. Take it
all in...because, in the morning, you will come outside to discover
that your beautiful foliage was merely a well-displayed feast for
the neighborhood deer to enjoy! In case you were wondering,
they walked away with full bellies laughing at you.
You are baffled because you even gave everything a spritz of that
smelly spray the hardware store sold you! If you want to have a
landscape that the deer will gladly pass by, then here are some
things to consider. Keep in mind, these are suggestions and tips.
Some deer (especially young ones) are brave, hungry, or maybe
vengeful and will try to eat anything!
Deer love lush green, colorful plants surrounded by rich soil. If you
have a garden bed or specific area you need to protect, then deer
fencing (if HOA approved) will be your best line of defense. If that
is not possible, then here are some tips that will help deter them.

• Frequent applications of nursery-grade deer spray may help
repel the deer. Apply especially to young plants until they are
established. Keep in mind, rain and irrigation will wash away
spray so frequency is key.
• There are many plants that deer will typically turn their nose
up to. The book 50 Beautiful Deer-Resistant Plants by Ruth
Rogers as well as Xeriscaping in the High Desert provides a col-
lection of foliage with characteristics that deer tend to avoid.
• Many popular plants that deer are less drawn to in our area
include Potentilla, Russian Sage, Salvia, Bluebeard, and the
fragrant English Lavender. Deer tend to avoid plants with
spines, fuzzy leaves, and that are overly fragrant to them.
So, before you head to your favorite nursery or home store, do
some research on which types of plants and bushes do best in
our area for climate and deer resistance. Also, check for the
neighborhood-approved plant list! This will save you from some
serious spring disappointment when it comes to your landscape!

MEET BOWIE

You might recognize this handsome face from our first issue of
High Desert Living. Bowie was so eager to be with his human
family (Sam, Sarah, Lexi, Isaac, Micah, and Noah) as they were
getting photographed for the front cover, we wanted to give this
photogenic pooch his very own spotlight.
Meet Bowie! An athletic and energetic 5-year-old, Terrier mixed
breed, that loves to race around the yard and play catch with his
squeaky tennis ball. He can jump very high to catch his balls,
shakes, rolls over, and even gives high fives. Bowie loves to go on
walks to pick up the kids from school but feels most comfortable
hanging out at home, standing guard at the front door, and bark-
ing at every dog that passes by.
The Rafails found Bowie’s litter on Petfinder. The litter and the
mother were in foster care after being brought back from Tijuana.
They went over to the foster’s home to meet the puppies as they
were originally interested in one of his sisters, who was a poodle
mix. Bowie wouldn’t leave Sarah’s lap the entire time they were
there to meet the puppies. “I knew he was meant to be ours.” His
original name from foster care was Blondie. They thought that
sounded more like a girl’s name and kept calling him a her. David
Bowie passed away right around the time that they adopted him
so they changed it to Bowie since it wasn’t too different from his
original name.
A couple of weeks after they adopted Bowie, he started limping.
He was also throwing up a lot and wouldn’t eat. Sam and Lexi

took him to the vet to get checked out. The vet told them that
Bowie had distemper. This is a fatal disease that dogs are usually
vaccinated for. In his case, he caught it in Mexico before they
adopted him. The vet said that it was neurological by now and that
was why he was limping. “He told us that he would have to be “put
down” before his condition declined. We were devastated. We
reached out to the rescue group that we adopted him from and she
knew of a vet in Texas who does a Newcastle Virus Disease spinal
tap that can possibly cure Bowie’s distemper.” Without hesitation,
Sam said that he would drive Bowie to Texas from California if he
could find a friend to trade off the driving. His best friend offered
to help and they left the very next day. Once getting to Texas, the
vet gave Bowie a 50% chance of surviving the surgery because he
was so sick to begin with. Well, Bowie survived and came back
home a healthy dog! “He had a crazy amount of energy, almost
TOO much. The only residual effect of the distemper is his teeth
not growing in, so he is all gums with a silly tongue that hangs out.
If you ever end up in this situation with a rescue dog, please reach
out to me, said Sarah Rafail. I can refer you to our vet. Distemper
does not have to be a death sentence.”
Bowie was never able to be socialized because he wasn’t able to
be around other dogs, due to distemper, for the first four months
of his life. “He is a bit neurotic and anti-social towards other
dogs to this day, so if you see us walking and he is reactive, this
is why.” When asked what the Rafails like best about Bowie, they
happily replied, “Bowie is very loyal and will “protect” his family
members from “strange” people and pets. Once he gets to know
you, he is the most lov-
ing animal. His tongue
sticks out to one side
because he is missing
most of his teeth due to
distemper and he will
try to lick you but his
tongue never makes it
to your face. He will lick
and lick but the tongue
always comes out to the
side. It’s so funny!”

Tim and Lisa Kerns have lived the last four years in Tetherow with their three
daughters – Jenna Anne (15), Kennady (14), and Addison (11) – and their dog,
Wrigley (3). After owning a vacation home in Sunriver for a few years, they felt
like Bend would be a perfect place to raise their children. They chose a beautiful
Tetherow home situated on the 16th hole and you can often find them together
barbecuing, visiting at their fire pit, hot tubbing, and enjoying Mt. Bachelor views
from their balcony.
Tim and Lisa were both born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. They
have known each other since high school and have been together since they
were 18 years old! They both attended college in California and married right
after graduating. This August they will be celebrating a very happy anniversary
of being married 20 years.
Tim works for Compass as a residential real estate advisor in
Menlo Park, CA, and commutes back and forth often. In the next
couple of months, the Kerns family is excitedly opening a “fami-
ly-friendly sports bar.” “It will have great food, mini golf, a batting
cage, and golf simulators as well as 12 TVs, private banquet rooms,
and a live music stage. It will be called Walt Reilly’s and will be
opening on Century Drive this summer.” Lisa can be found enjoying
the outdoors, having fun with family and friends, and getting a good
sweat in workout classes at CycleBar in the Old Mill and Barre3.
All three daughters attend Cascade Academy in Tumalo. Jenna
Anne is a freshman and has been enjoying running, cross country,
and track. Kennady is in eighth grade and loves baking and babysit-
ting. Addison is in fifth grade and will play any sport with a ball.
The Kerns family loves to travel any chance they get. Some of their
favorite places are The Big Island, Hawaii and Punta Mita, Mexico.
“Living in Central Oregon, it is nice to get to the ocean whenever
we can. Headlands Lodge in Pacific City on the Oregon Coast is also a
favorite. The rooms, food and setting are amazing.”
As a family, the Kerns’ love boating in the summer and skiing in
the winter. They love to travel, spend time with family and friends,
and eat out at local restaurants. The Washington is Tim and Lisa’s
favorite for the must-have “Sassy Local” cocktail, but they also enjoy
Jackson’s Corner, Lemon Tree and Wild Rose for Monday lunches
after a long weekend. When asked what they love about Tetherow,
they eagerly replied, “The Tetherow community and facilities have
been amazing! We can usually be found on the golf course, pool,
gym, and, of course, The Row.” Their love for Tetherow has even
spread to Lisa’s family. Within the last year, Lisa’s mom, dad, sister
and family have all moved into Tetherow sharing the joy and fond-
ness for this wonderful community.
The next time you see the Kerns family out and
about, don’t hesitate to say, “hi.” You will be wel-
comed immediately with beautiful smiles, make
an instant connection, and will feel like you have
genuinely known them forever.

2021 is well under way, with COVID-19 vaccines and therapeu-
tics approved for market, many investors wonder when we can
return to more stable social and economic activity. Even though
Wall Street recovered before Main Street, history suggests that
the two may not diverge for long periods of time.

In the “2021 Outlook Report: Forging a path forward,” Wells
Fargo Investment Institute (WFII) strategists detail opportunities
that may arise in the New Year, and how investors might take
advantage of them.

Here, WFII strategists offer their top five ideas for 2021.
• Hold the right amount of cash. Investors may be over-allo-
cated to cash, as money market balances remain near all-time
highs. In our view, investors should hold enough cash to meet
short-term liquidity needs to avoid selling assets at inoppor-
tune times. One potential way to invest excess cash is through
dollar-cost averaging—instead of investing one large sum,
invest smaller sums over time.
• Selectively increase risk. As investors look forward to the
end of the pandemic, we expect riskier assets like stocks to
outperform. However, we suggest that investors be selective
in how they increase risk. We generally favor U.S. stocks over
international stocks, because we believe that growth pros-
pects are stronger in the U.S. Within the U.S. stock market,
we prefer large-cap and mid-cap stocks over small-cap stocks,
because larger companies tend to have higher cash balances,
less debt, and better earnings growth. In fixed income, we favor
taking credit risk and keeping interest-rate sensitivity neutral.
• Consider exposure to higher-quality, growth-oriented
sectors. Quality remains a key theme, but cyclicality could
play a bigger role. We favor cyclical sectors that should demon-
strate more consistent performance as the U.S. economic
recovery advances. Our favored sectors include Information
Technology, Health Care, Communication Services, and
Consumer Discretionary.
• Diversify income sources. Within fixed income sectors, we
favor municipal bonds and investment-grade and high-yield
corporates, as we believe those sectors are well-positioned to
offer yield. Emerging market bonds, dividend-paying stocks,
and preferred securities may also offer attractive income
streams to a well-diversified portfolio.
• Be proactive, not reactive. Investors tend to exhibit cer-
tain behaviors that can lead to unwise decisions. In periods of
high volatility, we suggest taking action thoughtfully and not
reacting emotionally.
A periodic investment plan such as dollar-cost averaging does not ensure a profit or protect against
a loss in declining markets. Since such a strategy involves continuous investment, the investor should
consider his or her ability to continue purchases through periods of low price levels.

The tick is an eight-legged insect that
sucks the blood of wild animals, pets, and
humans. This winter in Central Oregon
was warm, increasing the tick’s activity
from early April through mid-fall. As we
enjoy the beautiful outdoors of Central
Oregon, be prepared for the patient
hunters and know that a high percentage carry Lyme Disease and
possibly 25 other bacterias, viruses, and parasites.
Ticks can’t jump or fly but they do wait for you or your pet to
brush up against them on tall grass, bushes, and woodpiles. They
can drop from a higher location onto you if they have detected your
presence. They do not have eyes but use their front legs to sense
the carbon dioxide of your breath output, odors, and body heat.
Avoiding a tick bite is possible by staying on the trails and
covering your legs and ankles. There are sprays but they can be
toxic to water life so please spray carefully. For a more natural
approach, utilize essential oils to avoid ticks. Your veterinarian
will have something for your pets. The best thing to do is to check
your body after every outdoor outing. The most notorious loca-
tions are your belly button, your toes, hairline, and behind the
ears. Ticks can be the size of a poppy seed.
If you are bitten, remove the tick in a specific way and place it
into a plastic bag. Go to your doctor and send it for lab testing
right away. The most comprehensive lab company is IGeneX Lab.
Symptoms of a tick bite can show up weeks to months later. It
is vital to get on antibiotics quickly. If you wait six months, the

virus has circulated the body and moves into chronic stages of
Lyme or other diseases. Early detection and treatment are cur-
able but late stages of Lyme are extremely difficult as it presents
with many symptoms, weakening of the immune system, and
provides other co-infections.
Common symptoms people experience
are fever, chills, fatigue, muscle aches,
pain and swelling of the joints, numbness,
weakness of the facial muscles, mem-
ory problems, shortness of breath, and
headaches. A bullseye rash at the bite site
is a clear diagnosis of Lyme Disease but is
sometimes missed. Another bite sign is the bite wound becomes
an eschar. As the chronic infection progresses, the symptoms can
grow in severity with additional complications of digestive, car-
diac, and neurological issues, as well as emotional disorders.
We live in fun adventurous terrain and I encourage you to
explore it all with a clear understanding of its wilderness.
Precautions are easy to do followed by body checks at home. Full
recovery from tick bites is absolutely accomplishable especially
the sooner you get treatment. The further along in the disease,
the more complex and lengthy the healing process.
