Project proposal title and date:
Rupi Kaurs Poetry
Main area of activity:
The main activity I will be working in will be Graphic Design and Typography. From these being
the main mediums I am working with; I will research into David Carson and other individuals which
will help inspire me in my work and production. This will allow me to gain a basis of where their
inspiration came from and how it can influence my decisions whilst producing my work.
Rationale:
Over the last two years I have made a variety of different products. This has given me skills from:
film, game design and graphic design. From these two years, I have gained knowledge of how to
use different software such as: Photoshop and illustrator. From working with this software closely it
has helped improve my time efficiency and accuracy with in my work. This is because I understand
what different tools do and where to locate them. I have also watched more Youtube tutorials on
how to create different textures and how to use different tools effectively, which has allowed me to
develop my skills further. An example of where new skills have been applied was my fanzine. For
this project, I used a graphics pad and learnt how to create shapes using the pen tool. This has
allowed me to explore different styles which has expanded my skills on how to make geometric
shape graphics to hand drawn products. From these products, I have learnt that different style
appeal to different target audiences. I have also learnt which style of graphics I am best at creating.
This is what has triggered my inspiration to create a poetry book on Rupi Kaur. This is because the
designs made will be my own interpretation on her work meaning I get to discover a personal way
of designing in an interpreted way. From working with graphics more this year I have grown a
good knowledge on use of colours. This is because I have created a lot of graphics on people
which has caused me to look and different colour skin tones and eye colours. This is so the design
has more depth in it. This is because it creates shadows and different textures.
This has triggered my fascination with typography and how it can affect a piece of work massively.
I have been inspired by David Carson who is a graphic designer and a typography specialist. What I
enjoy about his work is he turns the normal ideals of graphics and typography on its head. This is
an interesting concept to work with which is why I am wanting to explore his work more so that I
can include his ideals in my final major project. This means I will experiment more into typography
and develop my knowledge of this by watching Youtube tutorials and practicing on Photoshop and
illustrator. David Carson is up and current due to working with big brand names such as: Pepsi. This
is because he is such a unique artist with his own skills and styles which allow his designs to be so
unique to him.
Another aspect I have improved on over the last two years is my research. This has allowed me to
explore into different artists and designers such as: Salvador Dali and David Carson. This has
helped me understand more conventions included into different pieces of design work from
graphics to typography. It has also allowed me to understand why certain designs are made the
way they are and how people were inspired to make them. For example: David Carson was inspired
by his Psychology degree which is why he designs his work backwards to normal conventions.
Overall, I feel like over the last two years I have gained valuable skills in Photoshop as well as
planning. This is because I have stuck to deadlines this year due to using my time more effectively.
This has allowed me to make progress, especially in production as this was something I struggled

with last year.
Project Concept:
My concept for this project is to create a poetry book/fanzine on poetry. I will be concentration on
one specific poet known as: Rupi Kaur. I have chosen this poet because she has strong equality
views which I agree on. She is also a feminist which I feel like is relevant to issue with today’s
generation due to woman empowerment being a big part of growing up.
For this project, I will use her poetry and create illustrations for them. This will be my own personal
interpretation on her poetry. I feel like this personal touch will add my own style but also present
Rupi Kaurs work in a positive light. This will allow me to explore different styles, especially in
typography.
The research I will conduct will be research into Rupi Kaurs work and her background information.
This is so I understand why she created the poems the way she has. I will also look into artists and
graphic designers so that I can develop my design ideas. For example: David Carson is a well-
known graphic designer/typography specialist. His work could relate to Rupi Kaurs by creating
fonts in different ways and making the words flow with the illustrations I will be creating.
I will also research into how different poetry is illustrated because it will be interesting to see how
other people interpret poets work. This will allow me to explore different styles throughout
production.
This will help make my project effective because it will contain the convention that the poet is
wanting to achieve and its helping me develop my own personal style for the project.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
I will evaluate my project by conducting an on-going reflection diary. This is because it will allow
me to see where my strengths and weaknesses are and where I can improve to make my work
more effective. This will also allow me to track my process and will allow me to stay on schedule to
my production. This will help me be more time effective.
I will do this by analysing my work each work and showing my outcome. This will allow me to make
my project consistent by having a constant theme. This will allow me to develop my knowledge
further whilst using different software. This is because it will allow me to identify my weaknesses
and will allow me to think of different ways of improving it. This can lead to me watching you tube
tutorials and experimenting before production takes place. For example: I will be conducting
experiments on typography. This is because it is an aspect I haven’t looked at in-depth. From this,
it will allow my work to be effective and will appeal to my target audience. This will also allow me
to know which tools are best to use to achieve the best results. Another way I will evaluate my
work is by getting my target audience to analyse and give me feedback on my work. This will allow
me to improve my work so that it reaches my target audience as effectively as possible. This
feedback will also help me in the future so that I am more through with my research and planning.
I can achieve this by creating a survey of my work. This means people can rate my work out of 10
and they can give critical feedback. I can also ask class friends to answer questions such as: what
did you like about my work? How would you improve my work? Etc. This will allow me to gain
feedback from different audience groups which will help me expand my knowledge on other peer
groups further.
