How to Get to Ijen: From Bali, Surabaya,

leave from Denpasar at 6:00 p.m., it will take about three hours to reach Gilimanuk Port.
Night travel is usually relatively quiet and smooth. With a transit time of approximately 1
hour, you depart from Ketapang Port at around 9:00 PM WIB. Your first destination is Ijen
Crater.
The distance from Ketapang to Paltudingo is around 52 km, and according to Google
Maps, the journey takes around 1 hour 40 minutes. You are expected to arrive at the
Paltuding car park at around 11:00 PM WIB. While waiting for the entrance gate to open,
usually between 1:00 AM to 2:00 AM WIB, you can rest for another 2 hours before
preparing to climb Ijen Crater, which is 3 km away.
5. The hike to Ijen Crater takes about 3 hours, so you still have a chance to enjoy the blue fire
and sunrise at Ijen Crater.
• Getting to Ijen Crater from Surabaya
Here is the route to Ijen Crater from Surabaya that tourists must know to avoid
getting lost.
Using a Bus
For those using the bus, get off at Purabaya Surabaya Terminal and get off at Banyuwangi
Bus Terminal, which usually takes 7-8 hours, then take an ojek to the guesthouse. From the
guesthouse around Banyuwangi, the journey to Ijen takes approximately 1 hour. And please
note that there is no public transportation directly from Banyuwangi to Ijen at night.
Using a Train
For those who want to use the train, get off at Karang Asem Station in Banyuwangi. The
reason you choose to get off at Karangasem station is that you can find cheap and
comfortable accommodations/homestays and motorcycle rentals right in front of
Karangasem station. And what’s more special, the motorcycle rental there does not require
a deposit like other motorcycle rental companies.
Using Private Car/Rental Car
For those using a rental car, you have more flexibility and can adjust the timing. Starting
from Surabaya, you can continue the journey to the cities of Probolinggo – Bondowoso.
From Bondowoso, you can continue the journey to Mount Ijen, and then rest at a
homestay/hotel in Ijen.
After that, you can start hiking Mount Ijen early in the morning to reach the Ijen crater.
Don’t worry, you will be accompanied by local and foreign tourists, and there are many
sulfur mining workers who will follow your hike.
• Getting to Kawah Ijen from Yogyakarta
It is comfortable to use the train as traffic is less congested, comfortable, and
relaxing, with no need to change vehicles during the journey. PT KAI provides a train route
from Tugu Yogyakarta station directly to Kota Banyuwangi station with the Wijayakusuma
train.
The Wijayakusuma train offers three classes: Pengemudi, Bisnis, and Ekonomi with
fares ranging from IDR 270,000-485,000 per person. The journey takes about 12 hours,

on the train.
Nearby Destinations
• Kawah Wurung
This tourist area is known for its lush green grasslands. As its name suggests, it is a
tour around the Bondowoso crater. However, this crater is not as active as other craters
6. that can push the Earth’s interior. When you are in this area, you will see a view surrounded
by mountains.
That’s why this tourist spot looks like a hill instead of a crater. This natural tourist
area is not far from Ijen crater. The distance between the two is estimated to be only around
10 kilometers and can be accessed through the center of Bondowoso and Banyuwangi.
Kawah Wurung, which means “unformed crater” in Javanese, is different from other craters
because there is no water in it. However, from an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level,
you can see a very interesting and unique view. This crater tourist area offers various
activities that can be done, and the scenery can be a beautiful and interesting background
for your photos.
• Jagier Waterfall
This 20-meter-high waterfall is not alone, so when you visit it, you can see two other
waterfalls near Jagier Waterfall. However, the other two waterfalls do not come from the
river but from three different sources, namely Jagir Spring, Buyut Spring, and Pawon Spring.
Because these three waterfalls are located close to each other, people often refer to this
tourist attraction as the Twin Waterfall or Vendade Waterfall.
Of the two waterfalls near Jagier Waterfall, the most unique and attention-grabbing
is the Pawon Spring. It is named after its location behind a resident’s kitchen (“pawon” in
Javanese).
In addition, this waterfall also has the most beautiful view, as its water flow is not so
strong and quite wide, so there appear to be two or three water flows in one place. Under
this waterfall, there is a constantly flowing pool that is large enough for people to bathe and
soak in.
• Pendopo Banyuwangi
Pendopo is generally associated with feudal buildings and seems closed off from
society, which is very different from the Pendopo Sabha Swagata Blambangan, the
Banyuwangi government official residence. Established in 1771, this pavilion has become
one of the icons of Banyuwangi that you can visit during the Sunrise van Java city tour.
The pavilion building is located in the Sritanjung Park area. This area was once called the
“macapat administrative system” with Sritanjung Park as a meeting place (square) for
residents, then Pendopo as the Jami administrative center in the north of the area. The
mosque is a place of worship on the west side of the square, the prison as a symbol of
security (the current Sritanjung Mall) on the east side of the square, and the Banyuwangi
market as the center of economic activity.
• Boom Beach
This beach is one of the favorite places for tourists who come to witness the sunrise.
Its name is taken from the city of Banyuwangi and the sunrise in Java. You can see the
beauty of Bali Island from this beach location. This tourist spot is often used to hold various
international festivals.
This beach is usually known for its white or golden sand. However, the sand at Boom
Beach in Banyuwangi is black and has a dark grayish hue. The shiny black sand found on
this beach is said to contain many minerals that can be used to cure bone and skin diseases.
Visitors to the beach will not only enjoy its natural beauty, but also cultural tourism
organized by beachgoers. One of the tourist attractions that can be enjoyed is the
7. Pawai Gandrung Sewu, a cultural procession that showcases the traditional dance of
Banyuwangi performed by 1,000 enthusiastic dancers.
