HMP SPRINGHILL – The Reasons Why It Should
Be An Option For Employers.
HM Prison Service
Statement of Purpose
Her Majesty's Prison Service serves the public by keeping in custody
those committed by the courts. Our duty is to
look after them with humanity and help them lead law-abiding and useful
lives in custody and after release.
Our Prison Aims:
Our mission is to follow all of our residents from the point of inception to
the point of release with the aim of getting them into full time employment
or higher education and training placements.
Our Department Objectives:
The Activities Hub’s primary objective is to give all of our residents the
skills and tools to enable resettlement into the community with purpose
and motivation to change.
The 7 Pathways is the strategy used to aide the service in working
towards social inclusion for the resettlement of our Residents. If we
address all of these areas, then we reduce the risk of our Resident re-
offending and better the chances of positive resettlement.
They are:
Social inclusion, the converse of social exclusion, is affirmative action to
change the circumstances and habits that lead to, or have led to social
exclusion.
Growing crime rates may reflect the fact that a growing number of people
do not feel valued in the societies in which they live. The socially excluded
population are in favour of illegal means of fulfilling their goals and motives
in life as they have no other way to fit into a society that will not accept
them.
People increasingly grow up without guidance and support from the adult
population. People also face diminishing job opportunities to sustain a
livelihood. This can cause a sense of willingness to turn to illegitimate
means of sustaining a desired lifestyle.

Reasons Why You Should Give Them A Try:
1. They’re hungry for work – our residents want to be back in the
community, they will turn up on time, work harder and longer and be
grateful for the opportunity.
2. They’re skilled – whilst in custody they will be given education and
vocational skills that will be targeted to them getting employment, very
few will need initial training investment.
3. They’re supervised – be assured by employing our residents that
they will be continually supervised, they have been thoroughly assessed
and all risks considered. This is not a normal option for employers.
4. Helping them will help your community – by giving a resident a job
you will be helping prevent him from re-offending in the community.
5. You will tick that Social Responsibility box – most employers will
now have to prove what they do to address this, here’s your chance for
one big tick.
6. Everyone deserves a Second Chance!!!

status’s of our Resident’s resettlement.

Job Offer
Case Study 1:
 Colin, aged 43. In Custody for 4
years. Prison Wage £13 per
week. Gained English, Maths
and ICT skills, completed CSCS
card, completed Rail Track PTS
Course. Now employed with a
well known Rail Workers Agency
earning £150-£200 per day. Has
been released and is still
employed and in charge of his
own team!
Case Study 2:
 Pat, aged 33. In custody for 5
years. Earned £13 per week in
prison. Gained his Maths, English
and ICT qualifications. Became
an Office Orderly.
 Using those skills gained and
previous experience he has now
entered into the Transport Industry
and is being sponsored to train as
a Logistics Manager as well as
completing his CPC qualifications.
 This is a job for now and also
upon release.

  • 4. The 7 Pathways is the strategy used to aide the service in working towards social inclusion for the resettlement of our Residents. If we address all of these areas, then we reduce the risk of our Resident re- offending and better the chances of positive resettlement. They are:
  • 5. Social inclusion, the converse of social exclusion, is affirmative action to change the circumstances and habits that lead to, or have led to social exclusion. Growing crime rates may reflect the fact that a growing number of people do not feel valued in the societies in which they live. The socially excluded population are in favour of illegal means of fulfilling their goals and motives in life as they have no other way to fit into a society that will not accept them. People increasingly grow up without guidance and support from the adult population. People also face diminishing job opportunities to sustain a livelihood. This can cause a sense of willingness to turn to illegitimate means of sustaining a desired lifestyle. (Courtesy of Wikipedia)
  • 6. Reasons Why You Should Give Them A Try: 1. They’re hungry for work – our residents want to be back in the community, they will turn up on time, work harder and longer and be grateful for the opportunity. 2. They’re skilled – whilst in custody they will be given education and vocational skills that will be targeted to them getting employment, very few will need initial training investment. 3. They’re supervised – be assured by employing our residents that they will be continually supervised, they have been thoroughly assessed and all risks considered. This is not a normal option for employers. 4. Helping them will help your community – by giving a resident a job you will be helping prevent him from re-offending in the community. 5. You will tick that Social Responsibility box – most employers will now have to prove what they do to address this, here’s your chance for one big tick. 6. Everyone deserves a Second Chance!!!

  • 10. Case Study 1:  Colin, aged 43. In Custody for 4 years. Prison Wage £13 per week. Gained English, Maths and ICT skills, completed CSCS card, completed Rail Track PTS Course. Now employed with a well known Rail Workers Agency earning £150-£200 per day. Has been released and is still employed and in charge of his own team!
  • 11. Case Study 2:  Pat, aged 33. In custody for 5 years. Earned £13 per week in prison. Gained his Maths, English and ICT qualifications. Became an Office Orderly.  Using those skills gained and previous experience he has now entered into the Transport Industry and is being sponsored to train as a Logistics Manager as well as completing his CPC qualifications.  This is a job for now and also upon release.
