THE SHOREHOUSETaking up residence at the former site of The Naked Fig, this
new venture from Scott Taylor – he of The Trustee, Beaufort
Street Merchant and Enriques School for to Bullfighting – is
the kind of casual yet sophisticated spot you’d flock to with
out-of-towners.
Overlooking Swanbourne beach, the venue captures that
enviable West Australian coastal character, with an expansive
deck, airy dining room and crisp, nautical decor, setting the
tone for a meal to remember.
Oliver Gould’s Modern Australian menu showcases
the best of local seafood (why wouldn’t it?) including raw
selections; fruits de mer such as marron, crab, oysters, scallops
and prawns; blue swimmer crab; and tiger prawns in brown
butter, with capers and sorrel. Meaty and vegetarian fare also
delivers the goods – try something from the Josper oven, for
a juicy, charcoal hit that tastes like summer.
Breakfast is a mix of the creative and popular – the
crayfish brioche roll with tartare sauce and native spinach
should hit the spot after a morning swim.
The well-considered drinks menu, meanwhile, encourages
long stays; choose from bespoke Bloody Marys and gin and
tonics, an extensive range of whites and reds, or jugs of
cocktails for four (we recommend the Shorehouse Cooler,
pictured on our cover). Walk-ins are welcome – even the salt-
and-sand variety. It’s just that kinda place. 278 Marine Parade,
Swanbourne.
HOLLY RAYE’S
Bassendean may not be on everyone’s radar, but the
leafy eastern suburb is in the middle of a shake-up.
The proof is in this new kid on the block – chock full of
charm and urban cool – it’s been feeding the hordes
since October. Locals have flocked in for homemade
cakes and Micrology coffee (not to mention the Topdup
donuts) and the warm, welcoming vibe.
Owner Holly Irving says she wants people to feel at
home, enjoying traditional treats just like grandma used
to make. In fact, the cafe is named after Holly’s own
grandmother. “Both mine and my husband’s grandmas
had the middle name Raye,” she says.
The whole place is a family affair – Holly and her
mother bake everything, every morning, and her
husband helps out front. Even family dog, Angus, is
involved –artist Anya Brock captured his likeness in a
giant mural on the side of the building.
So what’s to eat? Holly says menu faves include
the breakfast guacamole and acai bowl, or try counter
treats like the Rise and Shine tart, Earl Grey fruitcake
and Bassendean Blackout cake (a riff on the decadent
Brooklyn variety). If you feel like something savoury we
can vouch for the karri-smoked bacon or Eggs Benedict
with pulled pork. 1 James Street, Bassendean.
The Hummus Club
Who knew the humble dip could draw a crowd? Husband-and-wife duo Ziad and Kaitlin Zammar had an inkling.
Touring markets since 2014, the couple launched their first pop-up store in October, to the delight of the CBD. The
tasty, modern mid-eastern cuisine appeals to the lunchtime rush, with queues of people tucking into Beef and Crisps
(spiced beef with pita and parsley), Shroom (pan-fried mushrooms with garlic and onion), and the FLT (falafel, lettuce
and tomato wrap with red onion, tahini and hummus). Most dishes are served with authentic hummus and fresh bread.

• Just up the road, Beaufort Street Merchant has been
relaunched as Beaufort Local. Still owned by brother-
and-sister team Scott and Angie Taylor, with a fresh
fitout, bar and menu.

is delish as a latte. This Como cafe also churns out some
exquisite desserts.

State BuildingsOf all the gifts this heritage development has bestowed on the CBD, dining
destinations would have to top the list. And they’re not just any ol’
restaurants –they’re diverse kitchens full of world-class talent.
Michelin-starred chef David Thompson brings his brand of
Thai street food to town with his first Australian venture in 14
years. Set in the basement of the Treasury building, Long
Chim Perth will offer close to 100 authentic, lip-smacking
dishes. If its Singapore predecessor is anything to go by,
we’re in for a treat.
Young gun Jesse Blake has already impressed
diners at Petition Kitchen, with his fresh, contemporary
bistro menu showcasing stellar produce. “I’m playing
with textures and flavours to give a different view or
perspective on a dish,” Jesse says. “It’s a very rustic
style, quirky and fun – not serious at all.” Menu highlights
include slow-cooked Fremantle octopus with house-made
kimchi, organic Blackwood Valley beef tartare, and a whole
split beef shin to share.
Glass-encased restaurant Wildflower overlooks the Swan
River, atop luxury hotel, COMO The Treasury. Acclaimed
executive chef Jed Gerrard will deliver dishes inspired by the six
seasons of Indigenous culture. For informal ground-level bistro, Post,
he’s created a contemporary Australian menu with a French influence.

GET YA FIX
“I think you have to be different, these days – you can’t just be a normal cafe,” says Get
Ya Fix co-owner Kev. Trust us: he’s definitely ticked that box. The cafe-slash-bike shop
(slash council headache, due to its hybrid vibe) opened in September with $1 pre-paid
coffee cards, uber-zen neutral sofas, minimalist bare bulbs, and a store stocked with
streetwear and on-trend fixed-gear bikes. But it’s not just for riders. “We’re trying to
make the place accessible to everyone,” Kev says.
1/471 William Street, Highgate.
THIRD WHEEL
Sure, there’s a crowd of regulars that descends on Third Wheel – but it’s not the long
mac-sipping, Lycra-clad cyclist packs owners Georgia and Tom anticipated when they
opened their doors. “We get a lot of local customers, and we also get a lot of people
walking up from the dog beach,” says Georgia. The cafe’s also popular with browsers at
next-door South Beach Cycles, and fits right in with South Freo’s tres-chill beachy vibe.
408 South Terrace, South Fremantle.
WORKSHOP ESPRESSO
With its communal wooden table, casual jars of native flowers, and striking black-
and-white mural, Workshop Espresso is surprisingly pretty for a cafe attached to an
industrial-style bike shop. Owners Felicity and John have found that customers seem
to agree. “We thought we’d be this cafe full of Lycra-clad men, but it’s completely
the opposite,” says Felicity. “We get heaps of locals, heaps of women coming in for
afternoon tea. It’s totally different to what we’d anticipated, which is really nice.”
206 Cambridge Street, Wembley.

Trend alert: Crumpets
We’re not talking the shop-bought variety: these delightful, spongy breakfast staples
have gone gourmet. Leading the charge is Mr Drummond’s Foods at the Subi Farmers
Market, where ex-MasterChef contestant Wade Drummond whips up his now-famous
chewy treats with a range of toppings, including caramel popcorn (pictured). They’ve
also been spotted around town at Architects Heroes (Subiaco), Aliment (West
Leederville), Gusto (South Perth) and The Other Side Café (Cottesloe).

Suppa Club
We are soup-er excited that Suppa Club is providing some chilled options for the long, hot
summer. Cold soup, you ask? It’s actually delish. The word soup comes from the Latin word
suppa, meaning bread dipped in broth, so the name and seasonal recipes are a no-brainer.
“My dream to revolutionise the fast food industry by bringing one of the oldest recipes known
to man back to the forefront and show the world that sustainable healthy eating doesn’t have
to be hard, time consuming or at all costly,” says owner David Kane. “All produce is sourced
from local farms south of Fremantle, and organic produce is used where possible.” Strawberry
and rhubarb, asparagus, gazpacho, blueberry, and peach are just a few options they’ll be
serving up this summer. Suppa Club is currently touring regular markets around town, but
keep an eye out for a shop in early 2016. Visit the Facebook page for locations and menus.
