An 84-year-old woman presented for her first visit to the clinic with her granddaughter. Her lung volumes and capacities were evaluated using spirometry. She was found to have moderate lung function impairment. She was taught pursed lips breathing and diaphragmatic breathing exercises and instructed to do them at home 10-15 times twice daily. Her progress will be assessed in a follow up appointment in 3 days.

Pursed Lips Breathing
Indications
The first: If tolerated: sit in
a chair, armchair or reclining
in bed supported by pillows.
The second: Inhale through
the nose slowly.
The third: Hold your breath,
if possible, for 2 or 3 seconds
(considering the tolerance
of the patient).
Finally: Form a U with your
lips to exhale slowly through
your mouth
