The ecological and economic transformations of our era present us
with challenges and opportunities of unprecedented scale and
complexity. These demand a disciplined, sophisticated, agile and
transdisciplinary approach to problem solving. Challenges such as
climate change threaten the security not only of our human
community, our built environment, and our economy, but also the
natural systems upon which we all depend.
The Sustainable Solutions Lab @ UMass Boston is a
collaborative, cross-disciplinary institute designed to provide a broad
range of innovative applied solutions to complex issues surrounding
climate change impacts on human and natural systems. These
include solutions to impacts on coastal human and natural systems
ranging across spatial and sectoral scales, from communities to
economies to society, encompassing adaptation and resiliency
planning and the associated security implications for affected
