Editor's Notes
Most are located in the State of Paraiso within driving distance from our compound, one hour east of the capital Tegucigalpa We only work in communities where we โve been invited and have strong relationships with community leaders to help coordinate and promote the brigade before we arrive Global Brigades chooses villages in need of extensive health infrastruce and is commited over the 5 years, to develop complete clean water systems and renovate all houses to include concrete floors, clean-burning stoves, latrines and water storage units in 20 of our villages
Location is typically a community school or church Triage Notes: Triage: BP, Allergies, Weight, Main Complaints Temperature on babies and elderly Sugar on diabetics and elderly BP on anyone over 40 Basic knowledge of Spanish is helpful here for communication reasons and because some of the names may be unfamiliar. Consultation Notes: Consultation: Doctors diagnose patients and prescribe appropriate prescriptions Students can either act as translators for the doctor or they may shadow the doctor. Both positions offers students a first hand experience in medicine. Doctors only treat cases within the abilities of the brigade. If further treatment is required, patients will be referred to Cl ฮฏ nica Santa Rosa de Lima. Pharmacy Notes: Prescriptions are filled by students under the supervision of a doctor or pharmacist. They will approve the final product and answer any student questions. All patient records need to be entered into our database. This information is used to generate our final report. Separate medicines by class Assign group volunteers to fill prescriptions Receive prescriptions from patients throughout the day and fill accordingly- keep families together When in doubt, go back to the medical professional who wrote the prescription and ask Make sure all patients thoroughly understand the directions for the medicines they are prescribed via translators Dental Station Notes: Often patients will walk hours looking for dental care at a brigade. As such, we strongly encourage Medical Brigades to recruit Dentists and pre-dental students to supplement a Medical Brigade.
Goals of PH Education: Emphasize crucial role of the patient in improving and maintaining his or her own health status Increase the early detection of certain clinical conditions and diseases Encourage the patient's use of effective prevention and treatment regimens Increase the patient's understanding of his or her own health statusย ย Involve the patient in a team-approach to his or her health care
*Global Brigades is 100% student funded and led. We are not reliant on any outside donations or grants to perpetuate our programming. As such, we focus on empowering students with the tools and resources to solicit support for their individual brigades. The "sustainability expense" enables us to maintain offices in Honduras, hire full-time native directors, provide housing for our long-term volunteers and manage the relationships and health trends in the communities we serve year-round.
