What is E-Waste?
Electronic waste or e-waste describes
discarded electrical or electronic
devices. Used electronics which are destined
for reuse, resale, salvage,
recycling, or disposal are also considered e-
waste.

‘E-Wastes’ ?
Problem with E-Waste
E-waste is highly complex to handle due to its
composition. It is made up of multiple components
some of which
contain toxic substances that have an adverse
impact on human
health and environment if not handled properly.
Often, these
problems arise out of improper recycling and
disposal methods.
This underlines the need for appropriate technology
for handling
and disposal of these chemicals.
Pollutants and their Occurrences in E-Waste
Impact of processing of different E-Waste
components on Environment
E-Waste Management
E-waste Management includes The following
activities:-
 Collection of E-waste
 Sorting of E-waste
 Processing of E-waste
 Recycling
 Dismantling
 Component Recovery from E-waste
 Residual Disposal of E-waste
Recycling of E-Waste
o Treatment Option of E-Waste
 Land filing
 Incineration
o Technology Currently Used in India
 Decontamination
 Dismantling
 Pulverization/Hammering
 Shredding
 Density separation using water
Responsibility and Role of
Citizens
 E-wastes should never be disposed with garbage and
household wastes.
 Customers should opt for upgrading their electronic
items to the latest versions rather than buying new.
 We should throw the E-waste separately in the E-waste
bins.
 While buying electronic products consumers should opt
for those that:
 are made with fewer toxic constituents.
 use recycled content.
 are energy efficient.
Circular Economy
A 'circular economy' would turn goods that are at the
end of
their service life into resources for others, closing
loops in industrial ecosystems and
minimizing waste . It would change economic logic
because it
replaces production with sufficiency: reuse what you
can, recycle what cannot be
reused, repair what is broken, remanufacture what
cannot be repaired.
