•How did the man come to the
point where he answered the
question “What do you do
here?” with “We save lives”?
•Why did Dr. Cooley frequently
stop and talk to the man
mopping the floor?
•Who are the “we” in “We save
lives”?
•What is our “We save lives”?
Dr. Marci Shepard Orting School District Teaching, Learning & Assessment 2010
5. Dr. Cooley
We need to “chart our
course” so that we all know
where we are, where we
are going and how we will
get there so we can work
together to make it
happen.
Dr. Marci Shepard Orting School District Teaching, Learning & Assessment 2010
6. Charting Our Course
In ancient times, mariners set out for new
worlds with the vaguest ideas about where
they were heading. What happened?
• They were unable to navigate the waters
and they perished
•It took a long time to find where they were
going
•When they arrived, they didn’t always know
where they were
Dr. Marci Shepard Orting School District Teaching, Learning & Assessment 2010
7. Charting Our Course

direction.
Dr. Marci Shepard Orting School District Teaching, Learning & Assessment 2010
24. Mission: Effective Districts
An effective district is
a tightly aligned

Dr. Marci Shepard Orting School District Teaching, Learning & Assessment 2010
25. Mission: Effective Districts
By contrast, a weak
district is
fractured, with a
group individuals
each operating
under their own
agenda.
