4. personal skills motivation note
Languages My passion about architecture and design began from a very young age, when I started
observing the beautiful, neoclassical buildings of my hometown, Syros. The materials, the
constructing method, the colours, made me realize what I wanted to be so that I can continue
this legacy, an architect.
Through my studies at the facutly of Architecture Engineering at A.U.Th., I learned about
landscape architecture, renovation and restauration, residential and community design, urban
planning, public building design, history of art and architecture, and theory of architecture. My
design thesis, presented in October 2015, is about an alternative open cinema, in a coastal
location of Syros, Greece, and in this project landscape architecture, public buildings and
restauration are the main designing tools.
Regarding my enthusiasm to work abroad, I love interacting with people who have different
cultures and thus different architectural influences. It is a personal goal to travel a lot and
involve as an architect and as a person.
My first experience in living and working abroad is with the Erasmus program, a well-
known European program that allows students to live in another country for several months,
either for studies or a traineeship. I chose to follow the traineeship program, by working for a
great architecture office in Antwerp, BF Architecture. This 6-month internship introduced me to
Belgian architecture, to different designing tools and to a different approach to the work of the
architect. Mr Fogel, the CEO and founder architect of the office, is a true mentor and plays a
very important role to my professional evolution.
I believe that I would be a great addition to your team, since I share the same passions
and ambitions with your office, I would like to evolve in an international, multicultural environment
and I can easily adapt to every office’s needs. Having worked in offices with high demands,
I have evolved my multitasking skills, my coping with challenging projects and my innovative
capacities. Lastly, the best aspect of our profession for me, is collaborating and sharing ideas
with the colleagues, and that is something I really enjoy doing.

6. Energy Shells

The objective of the environmental pavilion is to inform the visitors
about the environmental and energy issues, which are ignored by a large
part of the Greek population. Therefore, the pavillion itself must adopt
comprehensive energy strategies that allow it to operate independently
and with low energy consumption.
The materials selected are environmentally friendly, aesthetically
pleasing and with high heat capacity.For the outer shell we use paneled
beech, wood with low coefficient of thermal conductivity, which is be
processed in the form Zip Shape in order to be easily curved.
The concept of the form is a solid volume that is reminiscent of
animals’ nest. This volume breaks at two points and three different spaces
emerge, the exhibition area, the info point and the projection area. All
the spaces are roofed with small openings at specific points that allow
sufficient natural light. An additional surface forms the canopy and
embraces the transparent volume of the info point and functionally defines
the two main entrances to the north and south of the pavilion.

8. Stable Restoration

The camp Pavlou Mela is one of the biggest vacant spaces of
Thessaloniki. It has great possibilities of becoming one huge green
park, though today is still a ‘no man’s land’. In order to revive the camp,
redesigning the surroundings and the terrain is not enough. The historical
shells inside the camp must be used appropriately to meet the new uses of
the camp.
The degree of intervention should be determined by the respect
of the historicity of the shell, which is associated with the typological and
morphological characteristics but also with the “image “ that has shaped
the collective memory and by the requirements of the new use and
whether they verify a certain compatibility with the shell.
Regarding the preservation and restoration of the historic shells, we
propose the following:
-In the stables A and C , where no trace of roofing survives, we
choose to keep the original stonework to the existing situation, in order
to act as a functional threshold for new uses and mnemonic trace with
respect to the historicity of the complex of stables. At the exterior face
of masonry deemed necessary actions to stabilize the flimsy coating
and testing of mortar. At the end of the wall, it is necessary to spread a
qualified roofing cement to maintain the status quo without the possible
deterioration and damage from moisture.
-In order to reinforce the masonry and the new additions, we added
a perimeter bountreli made of reinforced steel, which is anchored in the
existing masonry bolts.

10. Landscape Design

The concept of our design is the emergence of the stream
landscape within the urban fabric, creating connections between them
and continuing the visual and sensory reality. We try to approach the
direct communication of the landscape with the man through routes and
stops that will offer a different experience in the urban space.
Based on the intense morphology of the stream and in order to
maintain the nature of the landscape, we choose to use mainly natural
materials. Moreover, we propose the introduction of the water element as
an essential and constant aspect of the design and expansion of green
plantings through the surrounding urban fabric, thereby enhancing the
visual connection to the stream.
Specifically, the introduction and tour of the pedestrian in the stream
is through the central wooden path gentle slope, which crosses the stream
throughout its length. A second course is p designed, which follows the
morphology of terrain and vegetation, offering pedestrian a different
experience of space. Also, some cross paths are needed in order to allow
the connection between the sides of the stream and the stream itself.
Finally, resting points are created, which are directly connected with the
main course and in which the presence of the water element dominates.

13. Conceptualizing
the context

The concept derives from the shape of a snake, an animal that
survives in the region of Evros’ Delta. This choice is not accidental,
because like the snake, so the construction must be adapted to the site,
must be constantly in contact with the ground and should have a texture
that is not foreign to the environment, but it seems like be disclosed or be
created from it.
Key idea of the composition was the construction of specific
motifs, different for stop and movement, which are derived from the mesh
generation of the plot diced to 7.50x7.50 meters shapes. The patterns
of movement would follow the curve and the branches that would
be created, and at the end of the course patterns of stop would be
developped. Furthermore, three different levels would add interest to route
and would reflect the variation of the same Delta.
The final concept is formed based on the pixels, which implement
the route by breaking it into smaller rectangular elements of varying
lengths and heights. The rectangular segments are analyzed in linear,
metal elements. Thus, a game of focus and removal is created, where the
structure gives a different impression depending each time on the distance
of the observer. The empty and full, thereby, acquire roles potentially
negotiable, not at all absolute and alternating. By breaking the dipoles
and following the trails of water, a game of accessibility is being created.

14. Urban Design_

Three main points emerged from the analysis of the site and were
identified as the main features of the area. These are the low quality of life
of residents, the fragmented urban fabric and the degradation of land
adjacent to the railroad tracks that cross a large part of the region.
Taking those characteristics into account and trying to envision a
renewed and functional tissue without reversing its peculiar character, three
strategic directions were given:
(a) The strengthening of the residential character,
(b) the creation of a single network of public spaces and
(c) the creation a single green network.
Through this design, our long-term goals are to upgrade the quality
of life of residents, to keep the consistency of the urban fabric by restoring
the functional and spatial continuity and the memory retention, industrial,
agricultural and general history, through the rehabilitation of vacant
industrial shells. Also, we want to strengthen local entrepreneurship by
creating incentives and jobs with new uses that are hosted in the three
poles of attraction. Finally, we redesign the rail line areas, turning an
otherwise problematic area in ambulatory path for the residents but also
an attraction for visitors.

16. Diploma Thesis_
CINEMATOPIA:

This diploma project aims in creating a base for the activities of
the newly founded Syros International Film Festival, covering its spatial
requirements and establishing a landmark for Hermoupolis.
This base is positioned in a open plot by the sea, in the historical
quarter of Vaporia in the north eastern part of the city, a place bearing
the potential of evolving into a new pole of vibrancy and attraction of
visitors. The program includes spaces for workshops and movie production
that correspond to the experimental aspects the festival wishes to
embrace, administration offices, as well as an open and a closed
projection venue.
17. The first focal point is the urban integration of
our proposal, which is achieved with the design
of the main seaside promenade leading to the
site, by redefining the walking route and the
docks for the swimmers, and also by designing
urban equipment. Regarding the site itself, we
choose to maintain the open-air character by
incorporating the volumes into the landscape
formation, and take advantage of the acute
slope and the existing vegetation. The point
of departure for our concept is xerolithia
(stone walls forming the landscape) and the
arrangement in levels, both important elements
of Cycladic architecture.

CONCEPT
Through the alternation of closed and open,
buried and protruding, the ensemble translates
the transition from rural to open-air, from the clear
straight lines to the roughness of crooked ones.
Our design proposal is formatted as a courtyard
with strict boundaries, but fluid interior which guides
you to navigate from the existing stone buildings
to the new additions and projection venues that
constitute the ebullition point. Particular emphasis
was given in the clarification of the borders, namely
the continuation of the urban front in the north,
the break to access the sea in the south and the
creation of different types of entering, with the west
gate acting as the main one.
22. International Museum
of Astronomy

This proposal presents the International Museum of Astronomy of
Atacama, which introduces the visitor to his acquaintance to the universe
and the science of astronomy. Taking that as a principle and in relation
to the Atacama area, the design derives from the collision and the
union of a celestial body to the ground, creating this way cracks and
building volumes of different heights and symbolizing thus the unbreakable
relationship between the earth and the universe.
The cracks play the leading role to the architectural design, as
they contribute to the connection and the development of the building
volumes, which are placed at the perimeter of the sphere-planetarium
and refer to different uses according to their orientation. The suggestion
is deeply influenced by the principles and the references to the local
architecture of Chile, both in the composition and in the construction
sector. This is particularly evident in the building entrance where there is a
garden that leads the visitor to the main building, a handling that is very
common at the Chilean dwelling. Another reference is that the main core of
the building is developed in its interior.
