Conversation Analysis

2. Discourse analysis (DA), or discourse studies, is a general
Term for a number of approaches to analyzing written,
vocal, or sign language use or any
significant semiotic event.

3. Data Categorization
 The data taken for analysis is naturally occurring
dialogue on phone.
 It is between two strangers who happen to become
known due to a wrong call.
 Ameer calls his friend Majid and did not recognize the
voice. In fact the Majid whom Ameer calls is not the one
who is Ameer’s friend.
 This wrong call happen to become known as Majid
introduces himself to Ameer and he agrees to become
his customer as Majid ahmed is a sales manager of Jazz
and Ameer agrees to buy connection from him.
 The phone conversation lasts for 1min 14 sec.

Turn Taking:
Turn-taking refers to the process by which people
In a conversation decide who is to speak next.
Total number of turns taken in this conversation

B Ameer.

Ameer: Walikum Salam! Kesy hoo aap?

7. Adjacency pair:
The speaker’s follows the adjacency pair as they know
what comes after what like greeting follows greeting,
questions follows the response and requests follows
acceptance.

10. Flouting of Maxim:
Here both speakers flouts the maxim of manner as they
both were not clear about whom they were talking.

Ameer: Mujy Mr majid aziz say baat krni hy .

12. Repair:
Repair is present in the conversation. As one speaker
corrects the other.
