Game-Based-Learning: Use of digital scavenger hunts in the classroom, Martin Hofmann, University of Teacher Education St.Gallen, Switzerland
In a scavenger hunt (treasure hunt) the participants follow instructions that are designed in the field and show the way to a defined checkpoint. The digital scavenger hunt takes up this idea as well as the fun of the search and develops both by using advanced technologies. Participants can login with smartphones or tablets into the game and then embark on to the adventurous quest. Now the objects are visible on the screen when reaching the predefined locations. At each checkpoint one has to solve either a question in form of a text, a multiple choice question, a picture or a QR task. This will challenge the teams, tests the knowledge and identifies gaps. The digital scavenger hunt combines moved learning, discovery-based learning, game-based learning, social learning and mobile learning. Digital scavenger hunts are ideal for teaching at all school levels.

Before we start I will show you a Student-Video about our mobile learning project «Digital Scanevneger hunt» at the University of teacher education St.Gallen in Switzerland.
Scavenger hunt, Treasure hunt, Orienteering and scouting game is nothing new at schools.
We made our first experience with digital scavenger hunts in 2006 with students.
This was a digital scavenger hunt through the historic city rorschach, where our University of Teacher Education is to situaded
We also made first experience with digital scavenger hunts in 2006 with elementary school children.
The New Media Consortium Horizon Report identifies and describes key trends, significant challenges, and emerging technologies likely to have a large impact over the coming five years in education around the globe.
Games and Gamification will be a important technology in two to three Years in pre-college education.
So we started a E-Learning innovation project with the following objectives.
Our students have developed various digital scavenger hunts for teaching.
Treesavers is a digital scavenger hunt for a elementary school class.
It is about saving the forest and nature.
Die PHSG – Survival-Guide is a digital scavenger hunt around the university campus for students.
Here you see a digital scavenger hunt in kindergarten, where children search in the forest the QR codes.
Since 3 years we use the digital scavenger hunt tool Scanvenger for creating professional hunts.
LINEAR MODE: This is the right mode to start with! Lead your participants from the first to the last checkpoint, following a fixed route.
COLLECT MODE: Spread checkpoints and let your participants „collect“ them. They can start on every checkpoint! Chose the map to be public, so they can put their own route together. If you hide the map, the system will send the participants to the closest checkpoint available.
STORY MODE: This is the most challenging mode! Set up the checkpoints and connect them afterwards. Here is an example. In your story, a crime happend. The first question will therefore be „Your favorite shop has been robbed. So... A)You chose to investigate, B)You run home, or C)You hide, because it was you!“ Answer A links to the checkpoint at the police station, answer B ends the hunt, and C links to a checkpoint in an abandoned warehouse.
Since 1 year we use the digital scavenger hunt tool Acionbound for creating professional hunts.
Actionbound is also a app for smartphones or tablets.
You can also create simple hunts with a free QR-Code-Generator; for example with the Kaywa Generator.
So you only have to scan a QR-Code with a mobile phone to reach the next checkpoint.
With QR codes not only scavenger hunts can be created, but other messages are received.
Here you see our youngest soon Simon baking the cookies for you.
