(2015). Reduction in saturated fat intake for cardiovascular disease . Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2015, CD011737. Public health recommendations for fat reduction and modification as prevention of cardiovascular disease have changed little over time. This Cochrane review examines the effect of reducing saturated fat intake through modification on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality through 15 randomised control trials. 17 comparisons with 59,000 participants demonstrate a 17% (RR 0.83; 95% CI 0.72 to 0.96) reduction of cardiovascular events by reducing dietary saturated fat. This webinar will examine the effect of replacing saturated fat with carbohydrate, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and explore future recommendations.

DeGroote School of Medicine, McMaster University, led the session and presented findings from their latest BMC Public Health review: Hoffman SJ, & Tan C. (2015). Overview of systematic reviews on the health-related effects of government tobacco control policies. BMC Public Health, 15(744). The global tobacco epidemic is a major public health problem that continues to deepen, with nearly 1 billion smokers worldwide in 2012. Government interventions are critical to addressing the global tobacco epidemic as it is the leading cause of preventable death, resulting in approximately 6 million unnecessary deaths per year. This review examines the effectiveness of government tobacco control policies promoted by the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), supporting the implementation of this international treaty on the tenth anniversary of it entering into force. This webinar highlighted factors that contribute to the effectiveness of government tobacco control policies as well as implications for practice.

Historically, information about MDT decision making was captured as free text in the electronic medical record, including patient investigation and staging. This information was accessible to clinical staff; however, it was not routinely distributed to GPs involved in the patient's care. Two topics were presented: Dr. Yoanna Skrobik advocated on the side of Pain, Agitation and Delirium. Dr. Claudio Martin and Cathy Mawdsley advocated for working on End of Life Care. Callers voted at the end of the call and chose the new topic led by Dr. Skrobik: Managing “PAD” in your ICU patient: assessment, treatment and prevention.

Hepatocellular cancer (HCC) is among the top 10 causes of cancer death in Australia, with ~80% of cases attributable to chronic viral hepatitis. Although 60-80% of HCCs are preventable by antiviral therapies, multiple barriers exist in the diagnostic and treatment continuum. Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is the main cause for rising HCC rates in Western Sydney, where the greatest burden of disease is among people born in hepatitis B endemic countries.
