Climate Change as an Opportunity @ UMDCP 2017
1. Entrepreneurs are the key to solving challenges in food, air, energy, and water. The paradigm has already shifted, respect for people and
planet is the name of the game. There is $100 trillion to be mobilized. During this talk, the Co-Founder of Impossible Labs, Matthew
Eshed, will share his perspective on regeneration, resilience, the circular economy, and the opportunities for young entrepreneurs to build
next-generation technology businesses.
Matthew Eshed, BSME '12, is a sustainable systems engineer working to build organizations where motivated people can do the best
work of their lives. He is the co-founder of San Francisco-based Impossible Labs, where he directs programs and operations for a global
network of climate adaptation labs and corporate accelerators. He is energized by shifting mindsets away from take-make-waste, to a
circular economy of mutual respect between people and planet, where no resource is wasted. His goal for the next five years is to live off-
grid and grow 90% of the food he eats.

4. Permaculture
“Consciously designed landscapes which mimic
the patterns and relationships found in nature,
while yielding an abundance of food, fibre and
energy for provision of local needs.’ People, their
buildings and the ways in which they organise
themselves are central to permaculture. Thus the
permaculture vision of permanent or sustainable
agriculture has evolved to one of permanent or
sustainable culture.”

9. The capacity of a system to absorb disturbance and re-
organize while undergoing change so as to still retain
essentially the same function, structure, identity, and
feedbacks.

11. Circular Economy
A continuous positive development cycle that preserves and enhances natural capital, optimizes resource yields,
and minimizes system risks by managing finite stocks and renewable flows. It works effectively at every scale.

15. Here, great gets greater. Theory becomes practice. Thinking turns into doing. Power becomes action. We’re not
satisfied with beginnings. We need to set things in motion. Start movements. Shift behavior. Break new ground.
Step forward. Challenge convention. Jump in. Stir the pot. See things others miss. Enter through different doors.
Embrace impossible. Raise expectations. Build communities. Move boundaries.
We are provocateurs. Perfectionists. Entrepreneurs. Curious. Empathetic. Active. And hungry. Our path will be
ongoing and will not be summed up by a single slogan. We have a mighty spirit inside that will not be denied.
Let us stand together and chart our course. Let us capture imaginations. Allow the world to see our genius, our
talent, our heritage, our future. We are the University of Maryland. Fear the Turtle.

"Under the current Gross National Product - GNP - system... all we do is add together
