CAREER OVERVIEW & AMBITIONS
My name is Matthew Schroeder. I am 29 years old and come from Newcastle, South Africa.
I am currently completing my Social Anthropology master’s degree at UCT and teaching
English & Social Sciences at a private language centre in Cape Town. I grew up in the Natal
Battlefields and Durban, and have been living, studying and working in Cape Town on and off
for 9 years; with mountaineering, hitch-hiking and backpacking journeys to Argentina, Chile,
Bolivia, Peru, Spain, Kenya, Tanzania, Nepal and India in between. After 6 years at university
and extensive travel, teaching, ethnography, research and writing experience, I am aiming to
develop my career as an Applied Social Anthropologist, engaged at the interface of policy
and practice within municipal/provincial/national government, corporate or civil society.
To date, my work experience has comprised of three main fields; humanitarianism and
leadership (10 years) education & training (5 years), and ethnography, research &
writing (6 years). My present career ambition is to be employed within a company,
organization or department where I am able to apply the above areas of expertise as well and
expand my skills and competencies through new avenues. I am particularly interested in - but
certainly not limited to - the following kinds of positions: project organization and
management, policy analysis and implementation, research and communication,
development anthropology, leadership in socio-economic development, cultural consultancy,
program monitoring & evaluation, social impact assessing and related fields of expertise.
I was once taught that ‘to whom much is given, much is expected’. As such, I feel that as a
privileged citizen of this country - and the world - it is my responsibility and intention to apply
my education and experience toward contributing meaningfully and tangibly to making a
positive, lasting difference to society and the world, where so much transformation is needed.
As a person, employee and team-member I am committed, determined, patient, empathetic,
kind, ambitious, outspoken and confident. I have excellent computer skills, am an effective
oral and written communicator and possess strong organizational, management and
leadership capabilities. I am also very open-minded and willing to learn new competencies
and relish fresh challenges.
