1. Welcome Message
I am delighted to hear that a seminar is going to be held on Renewable
Energy and Social Acceptability at Chittagong University of Engineering &
Technology (CUET) campus on 7 July, 2013. The world is now at a
danger of over consumption of its non-renewable resources.
Consequently climate change, Ozone layer depletion, desertification, rise
of sea level, catastrophic attack of cyclones, tornadoes etc. have
aggravated the crux and threatened much of the human being of this earth
to survive and sustain. It is becoming a doomsday reckon to exist at the
surface of this earth. However, development and survival require energy
to be used or consumed by human being. From this standpoint the
alternative thinking for renewable energy use with its social acceptability
issues has become crucial. I wholeheartedly welcome the upcoming
seminar and its success that is based on the aforesaid issues.
Prof. Mohammad Rafiqul Alam
Pro-Vice Chancellor of CUET
Theme of the seminar
Energy is an essential ingredient in the development of industrial activity
and this must be allocated in the best possible manner to continue the
prosperity of the economy. The whole world today relies heavily on fossil
fuels like coal, oil and natural gas for its energy. The continuous depletion
of reserve of these fuels as well as the fluctuation in the price of crude oil
has made energy independence imperative. Time has come to give
recognition to the use of renewable energy which is free from
environmental pollution, and also to keep balance from deforestation in
managing atmospheric emission of green house effect, etc. As the existing
world reserve of gas and oil will be exhausted if more sources are not
explored further, alternative safe source of energy is required to be
explored. To combat future energy crises, it has become vitally important
to deal with renewable energy, sustainable development and social
acceptability issues with great concern.
