3. How ozone works
Part 1
• There are three different ozone denim-bleaching methods in use today: wet, dry, and plasma. Of these, the wet and dry methods are currently the most common.
• A typical machine takes in oxygen from the air and converts it to ozone using electricity (ozone is produced naturally in the atmosphere during thunderstorms).
• The ozone is transferred into a sealed chamber (with or without water) where the bleaching takes place. In the wet process, the ozone is dissolved in water in a specially
sealed washing machine. For the dry process, ozone is added to the sealed chamber without water.
Part 2
• The wet process is effective for creating whole-garment bleach effects without using enzymes, bleach or PP. The dry process is effective at removing back-staining from
pockets and labels without bleaching the denim, and without using pocket-white chemicals.
• The dry process can also be used for specialized effects by wetting the denim before adding it to the machine. When ozone chemically reacts with indigo it is converted
back into oxygen. After the process is complete, any remaining ozone is converted back into oxygen before the machine is opened and the garments removed.

Sources of Natural
Dyes
⦿ Natural dyes are considered to be eco-friendly as these are obtained from renewable resources as compared to synthetic dyes which are derived from non-renewable
petroleum resources.
⦿ These are biodegradable and the residual vegetal matter left after extraction of the dyes can be easily composted and used as fertilizer. They produce soft colors soothing to the
eye which are in harmony with nature.
⦿ In addition to these environmental benefits, natural dyes also offer functional benefits to the wearer and users of such textiles. Many of the natural dyes absorb in the
ultraviolet light. Improvement in UV protection characteristics of natural cellulosic fibers after treatment with natural dyes has been reported by various researchers.
⦿ In this discharge, the BOD and COD levels are in the lowest tolerance which is completely environmental friendly.
Advantages of Natural Dyes
⦿ Natural dyes are more expensive than synthetic dyes due to their source material and the time it takes to produce them.
⦿ Colors can vary as well. Since depending on the natural ingredients, the hues can vary and uniformity can be bit difficult to
achieve, especially from crop season.
⦿ Natural dyes are from the natural based derivatives and it causes color variations in lot to lot in a minimum manageable level.
⦿ The liquid dyes get separated by sedimentation at the bottom of the packing. But this will not cause dyeing problems which is
solved by re-mixing the separated color with water.
⦿ However, considering their slew of benefits for the environment, these few disadvantages are worth it.
Disadvantages of Natural Dyes
⦿ Only possible to dye in garment form.
⦿ Limited colors available. Only single shade possible. Color combination not possible. Tone adjustment also not possible.
⦿ Only lighter shade can be achieved. Darker color not possible to achieve.
⦿ Production will slower comparing to normal dyeing.
⦿ Trichromatic color combination may not possible.
⦿ Very slow production to dye manufacture.
⦿ Only GOTS certificate possible, no other certification possible.

Laser is being used in apparel industry from nineteenth century for various garment manufacturing applications. There are several advantages of using laser over the conventional
processes in cutting, engraving, embossing, denim fading and other applications. In addition, product damage potential is reduced, no/less consumables are needed and no problem of
toxic by-product disposal as found in some processes. Today’s laser equipment is a result of continuous research and development of earlier products, which has undergone several
changes. The initial laser systems were cumbersome, hard to run and difficult to maintain. However, the modern laser systems are simpler in operation and maintenance. Furthermore,
the earlier systems were involved with more safety issues and needed the gasses to be constantly replenished. The garment manufactures around the globe should take the advantage
of laser application in the post multi-fibre agreement regime to make their products more competitive. This review focuses on the technology of laser including various classifications.
