Dr.Verghese Kurien
INTRODUCTION TO THE FATHER OF THE WHITE
REVOLUTION
 Dr.Kurien, was born on Nov.26,1921 in
Kozhikode,Kerala.
 Graduate with Physics from Loyola
College,Madras.
 Subsequently he did his
BE(Mechanical) from Madras
University.
 On a government scholarship in USA
completed his Masters in Mechanical
Engineering from Michigan State
University.
 In feb, 1946, he underwent nine months
of specialized training in dairy
engineering at the National Dairy
Research Institute of Banglore.
 Taken over by Dr.Kurien in 1950, Amul
Dairy was founded to stop exploitation of
farmers by middlemen.
 Initially known as Kaira District Co-
operative Milk Producers Union.
 Based in “ Anand”(Gujarat) , Dr. Kurien’s
vision and extraordinary intelligence built
the Dairy development co-operative model
into on e of the largest and most successful
institutions in India, called “AMUL”.
The Man who Revolutionized White
• A rare visionary who always translated his vision on mission
mode.
• He had an astute sense of Management and Marketing.
• He attempted to replicate the Anand Model nationally
through the launching operation flood programme(OFP).

On his return from the U.S in 1949, the
Government of India deputed him to a
creamery at Anand, in Gujarat where he
was supposed to serve five years as an
officer of the Dairy division.
He personally had no interest in dairy, but
had to perform this job in return for the
government scholarship.
Competitors.
Strategies used to overcome the
challenges
 There was one person, Tribhuvandas
Patel, who was trying his best to unite
the farmers in order to form a
cooperative movement and fight against
the exploitation.
 Kurien was greatly inspired by this man
and decided to join him.
 Analyzed the competitors marketing
strategies and worked on it.
 AND THE HISTORY CONTINUES…

dairy development programme in the world.

marketing federation ltd. (GCMMF)
