This is the script for a show I produced for the Samford News Network. I wrote the introductions and sign-outs. I assigned the reporters of the show to write the readers for their stories.

1. THOMAS: Coming up, we’ll tell you what Samford is planning for Women’s History Month and
why Relay for Life matters to Samford students.

THOMAS: Welcome to the Samford News Network. Good morning, I’m Yvonne Thomas.
REECE: And I’m Ally Reece. Thank you for joining us today.
THOMAS: After the Relay for Life kickoff in Ben Brown a couple of weeks ago, campus
organizations are preparing for the big event in April. While several organizations enjoy
participating, this event is much more than a fundraiser.

REECE: In honor of Women’s History Month, throughout March the Office of Diversity and
Intercultural initiatives is hosting a variety of events to get conversations started among
students. The first event was a cultural conversation held on Monday in Harry’s Coffeehouse
where An interactive panel discussed women in leadership at right here at Samford.
The second event was held Tuesday during convo hour when Football academic Advisor
Christina Harris spoke on Psalm 91 and God’s protection.
The next event will be on March 24, also during convo hour. Minister to students, April
Robinson, will speak on Psalm 73. The final event will be a “lunch and learn” on March 26 at
11:30 a.m. in the Howard Room. Sociology professor Theresa Davidson will discuss the topic:
“women’s issues or everyone’s issues? A call to action.” ​Registration is free and If you would

REECE: In honor of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, A rally for positive body
image took place on Samford’s campus last week. The “hashtag flawless Samford” campaign
set up a table in Harry’s where there was a photo booth, free samples of juices, and a mirror
wall with positive sticky notes. This was set up to promote the panel discussion later that
evening. The panel included a marriage and family counselor, a dietician, and the campus
counselor, Rich Yoakum. The event was sponsored by Samford’s counseling services, the
Samford Panhellenic Council, and several businesses throughout Birmingham. The purpose
was to encourage Samford students to view themselves and their bodies in a more positive
and healthy light.

REECE: Welcome back to SNN. This Friday students will be packing their bags and leaving
campus for spring break. Many students will be hitting the beach for some fun in the sun, but
surprisingly, many students are just going home to their families. Yesterday­I spoke with
several students about their exciting, and not so exciting, spring break plans, check it out­

REECE: Last week Campus Recreation hosted a free self­defense class for Samford
students. Mike Tucker from Magic City Dojo gave the students in attendance an introduction
to basic self­defense. The first hour of the session was lecture­based. Tucker outlined types
of violence and predators, and discussed mental tactics to recognize dangerous situations.

2. Tucker also talked about fear management, intuition signals, and the stages of conflict and
escalation. The last half hour of the session was a physical defense lesson. Tucker
demonstrated defensive moves and had the students practice with each other. Tucker’s main
advice in regards to self­defense is to make awareness a habit.
THOMAS: ​Chief Justice Jasmine Johnson ends her term with new legislation for students.

students can find ways to help them prepare their taxes this year.

SAUNDERS: ​Welcome back to the Samford News Network, I’m Caroline Saunders.
SAUNDERS: ​Marc Salyers a former professional basketball player who is now a student
assistant coach for the men’s basketball team has an interesting story of how he ended up
here at Samford, I caught up with Marc to talk to him about his career and how he got to
Samford.

Recap­ The men’s basketball team suffered a season ending loss to UNC Greensboro in the
first round of the SoCon tournament on Friday. The bulldogs will hopefully be on the path to
returning to their former glory, after Scott Padget signed a 4 year contract extension.
­The women’s basketball team also faced a devastating first round loss in the SoCon
Tournament losing to Furman 65­54. This ended the womens 2014­15 season with a record
of 15­15
­The women’s golf team took 4th place in the North Florida intercollegiate tournament on
tuesday. This top 5 finish for the golf team has been their third consecutive of the 2015
season.
­The men’s tennis team had an easy 7­0 win over Jackson State on Saturday in their power of
pink match. Samford with a 5­6 record this season has now improved 3­3 against home
contestants this season.
­The women’s tennis team continues to remain winless on road matches after a 5­2 loss to
South Alabama. The bulldogs are nearly perfect at home with a 5­1 record but are 0­5 for
road matches.
­The samford softball team dropped both of their games in the courtyard by marriott
tournament on Sunday. The bulldogs lost 8­6 to Missouri State and were defeated 15­8 by
number 6 University of Oklahoma
­The baseball team had no problem shutting out Auburn on tuesday at Plainsman Park with a
7­0 victory. With this win, head coach Casey Dunn now has an 11­11 record against his Alma
Mater

3. ­Schedules­ The baseball team will be back in action on Friday when the bulldogs open a
three­game series at Jacksonville. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 PM
­The men’s tennis team returns to the court on Friday at 3 PM as the bulldogs begin
conference play as they take on UNC Greensboro
­The softball team will be hosting Mississippi State today at the Samford Softball Field at 6
PM
­The women’s tennis team returns home this Saturday at they host Tulane at the Samford
tennis center. The match is set to begin at noon.
SAUNDERS: ​This past week, Samford’s men’s basketball team headed to Asheville North
Carolina where they played UNC Greensboro in the first round of the SoCon tournament. the
bulldogs would be eliminated in the first round but conference for Furman formed a cinderella
story of their own. The Paladins entered the tournament in last place and as the tenth seed.
They made their way to the championship game where they faced top­seeded Wofford.
Wofford would go onto to win the conference and punch their ticket into the NCAA tournament
­In the women’s SoCon championship, the samford women’s basketball team would enter the
tournament as a respectable 4­seed but would fall short in the first round against Furman. The
top two seeds ETSU and Chattanooga faced off in the championship game on March 8th
where number one seed Chattanooga would clinch their 11th SoCon title since 2001

announced they purchased the Southern Progress Corporation property next door to campus.
Our campus reporter, Megan Light, found out how Samford plans to use the newly acquired
land.
