2015
World Golf
Hall of Fame
A.W. TILLINGHAST
1876 - 1942
Born in 1876, Albert Warren
(A.W.) Tillinghast is the sixth golf
course architect to be inducted
into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Other members include Donald
Ross (1977), Robert Trent Jones
(1987), Allister MacKenzie (2005),
Charles Blair Macdonald (2007)
and Pete Dye (2008). Similar to
these prominent architects, Till-
inghast’s brilliance and creativity
is found in some of the greatest
golf courses in the United States.
The Philadelphia native, who
drew his inspiration from his
time spent with Old Tom Mor-
ris in St Andrews, especially left
his mark in the Northeast. In
the New York metropolitan area
alone, the man they called “Tilly”
left his mark on a few modern
day games, including Baltusrol
Golf Club, Bethpage Black, Quak-
er Ridge, Scarsdale, Sleepy Hol-
low Country Club, Somerset and
Winged Foot.
An original member of the PGA
of America, Tillinghast laid out
his first course in Shawnee-on-
Delaware in 1909 at age 36.
During a career in which his
fingerprints touched as many as
260 golf courses in the United
States, A.W. Tillinghast has had
his designs attached to 50 Major
Championships held at 24 differ-
ent venues.
Of those championships, many
of them staged a PGA Champi-
onship. Locations and tourna-
ment winners of note include
Medinah (Tiger Woods 2006),
Baltusrol (Phil Mickelson 2005)
and Winged Foot (Davis Love III
1997).
But it wasn’t just the PGA of
America that chose to hold
their annual championships at
Tillinghast-designed courses. The
United States Golf Association
(USGA) hosted the U.S. Open 11
times at iconic Tillinghast loca-
tions including Bethpage State

Park, Interlachen, Inverness and
Colonial. If Major Champion-
ships mean everything in golf,
it is no wonder that Tillinghast
had a truly Hall of Fame career.

Around of golf should present 18 inspirations. Every hole must have in-
dividuality,” Tilly declared numerous times. He was not only an accomplished
golf course designer, but also a prolific writer. During a 40-year span, Tilling-
hast published more than 400 articles and contributed regularly to magazines
including The American Golfer, Golf Illustrated, The Professional Golfer of
America, Golf and Golfer’s Magazine.
Tillinghast started his journalistic career as a newspaper editor in Philadelphia
covering golf and cricket. Many of his pieces were syndicated in various news-
papers throughout the United States. In 1915, the expert golfer published a
successful book of golf humor titled, Cobble Valley Golf Yarns and Other
Sketches. He followed with a sequel in 1925 entitled The Mutt… And Other
Golf Yarns. Additionally, he produced three volumes of collected articles. Over
100 of his essays on golf course architecture were compiled in The Course
Beautiful.
In Reminiscences of The Links, Tillinghast provides first-hand accounts of
American golf’s early history and its links to St Andrews, Scotland. In the third
volume of essays, Gleanings from the Wayside, he recounts his experiences
as he traveled around America designing and redesigning golf courses.

Scitent Announces General and Thoracic Surgery eLearning Site
to Teach Surgery Through Simulation Exercises in Developing Countries
Charlottesville, Va. – October 27, 2015 – Scitent, Inc., a full-service eLearning
company that helps organizations build their eLearning business, launched General
and Thoracic Surgery Education today, a website dedicated to helping general
surgery instructors in developing countries teach surgical procedures through
simulation for commonly encountered clinical problems.
According to Dr. Thomas Daniel, the founder of General and Thoracic Surgery
Education and professor emeritus of surgery at UVA School of Medicine, numerous
programs exist where physicians and healthcare staff travel to the developing world
to treat patients and conduct surgical procedures. “These visits often only last a
week or two and leave no sustained training for surgeons,” Dr. Daniel stressed,
adding, “My motivation in launching the free course is to provide a model for
teaching the local faculty who will, in turn, teach their own residents and medical
students. Teaching the teachers will create an accelerated and sustainable training
environment.”
The General and Thoracic Surgery Education course has a responsive, mobile-
friendly design, which is critical for the developing world where users increasingly
bypass desktops and choose smart phones and tablets for Internet access.
The free course utilizes simulation surgery exercises performed with standard
surgical instruments, locally available animal tissue and inexpensive materials that
can be purchased online.
While a simulation surgery course does not replace the typical intense and
prolonged surgical training program, it does provide residents in the developing
world with a head start at experiencing surgery. “Simulation accelerates the
learning process by creating environments where you can prepare in advance by
studying procedures online, then practice on models supplemented by harvested
animal tissue without the risk of injuring patients,” said Dr. Daniel.
“We’re very pleased to support this important initiative with our course
development services, distribution technologies and LMS, but we’re particularly
excited that this work can help close the education and healthcare gaps that still
exist in the developing world,” said Deb McMahon, president and CEO of Scitent.
The course includes 37 videos and describes six trans-abdominal and four trans-
thoracic surgery exercises using simulation techniques, including the positioning of
a patient for a thoracotomy. Aside from saving time, the online course reduces costs
by not having to purchase textbooks and enables students to study and prepare for
in-person training.

  • 11. Born in 1876, Albert Warren (A.W.) Tillinghast is the sixth golf course architect to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Other members include Donald Ross (1977), Robert Trent Jones (1987), Allister MacKenzie (2005), Charles Blair Macdonald (2007) and Pete Dye (2008). Similar to these prominent architects, Till- inghast’s brilliance and creativity is found in some of the greatest golf courses in the United States. The Philadelphia native, who drew his inspiration from his time spent with Old Tom Mor- ris in St Andrews, especially left his mark in the Northeast. In the New York metropolitan area alone, the man they called “Tilly” left his mark on a few modern day games, including Baltusrol Golf Club, Bethpage Black, Quak- er Ridge, Scarsdale, Sleepy Hol- low Country Club, Somerset and Winged Foot. An original member of the PGA of America, Tillinghast laid out his first course in Shawnee-on- Delaware in 1909 at age 36. During a career in which his fingerprints touched as many as 260 golf courses in the United States, A.W. Tillinghast has had his designs attached to 50 Major Championships held at 24 differ- ent venues. Of those championships, many of them staged a PGA Champi- onship. Locations and tourna- ment winners of note include Medinah (Tiger Woods 2006), Baltusrol (Phil Mickelson 2005) and Winged Foot (Davis Love III 1997). But it wasn’t just the PGA of America that chose to hold their annual championships at Tillinghast-designed courses. The United States Golf Association (USGA) hosted the U.S. Open 11 times at iconic Tillinghast loca- tions including Bethpage State Always dressed to a tee, Tillinghast examining plans during course construction. Park, Interlachen, Inverness and Colonial. If Major Champion- ships mean everything in golf, it is no wonder that Tillinghast had a truly Hall of Fame career. He was not only an accomplished golf course designer, but also a prolific writer. During a 40-year span, Tilling- hast published more than 400 articles and contributed regularly to magazines including The American Golfer, Golf Illustrated, The Professional Golfer of America, Golf and Golfer’s Magazine. Tillinghast started his journalistic career as a newspaper editor in Philadelphia covering golf and cricket. Many of his pieces were syndicated in various news- papers throughout the United States. In 1915, the expert golfer published a successful book of golf humor titled, Cobble Valley Golf Yarns and Other Sketches. He followed with a sequel in 1925 entitled The Mutt… And Other Golf Yarns. Additionally, he produced three volumes of collected articles. Over 100 of his essays on golf course architecture were compiled in The Course Beautiful. In Reminiscences of The Links, Tillinghast provides first-hand accounts of American golf’s early history and its links to St Andrews, Scotland. In the third volume of essays, Gleanings from the Wayside, he recounts his experiences as he traveled around America designing and redesigning golf courses. For more information, contact: Melissa Knabe 434-227-0023 mknabe@scitent.com Scitent Announces General and Thoracic Surgery eLearning Site to Teach Surgery Through Simulation Exercises in Developing Countries Charlottesville, Va. – October 27, 2015 – Scitent, Inc., a full-service eLearning company that helps organizations build their eLearning business, launched General and Thoracic Surgery Education today, a website dedicated to helping general surgery instructors in developing countries teach surgical procedures through simulation for commonly encountered clinical problems. According to Dr. Thomas Daniel, the founder of General and Thoracic Surgery Education and professor emeritus of surgery at UVA School of Medicine, numerous programs exist where physicians and healthcare staff travel to the developing world to treat patients and conduct surgical procedures. “These visits often only last a week or two and leave no sustained training for surgeons,” Dr. Daniel stressed, adding, “My motivation in launching the free course is to provide a model for teaching the local faculty who will, in turn, teach their own residents and medical students. Teaching the teachers will create an accelerated and sustainable training environment.” The General and Thoracic Surgery Education course has a responsive, mobile- friendly design, which is critical for the developing world where users increasingly bypass desktops and choose smart phones and tablets for Internet access. The free course utilizes simulation surgery exercises performed with standard surgical instruments, locally available animal tissue and inexpensive materials that can be purchased online. While a simulation surgery course does not replace the typical intense and prolonged surgical training program, it does provide residents in the developing world with a head start at experiencing surgery. “Simulation accelerates the learning process by creating environments where you can prepare in advance by studying procedures online, then practice on models supplemented by harvested animal tissue without the risk of injuring patients,” said Dr. Daniel. “We’re very pleased to support this important initiative with our course development services, distribution technologies and LMS, but we’re particularly excited that this work can help close the education and healthcare gaps that still exist in the developing world,” said Deb McMahon, president and CEO of Scitent.
  • 24. The course includes 37 videos and describes six trans-abdominal and four trans- thoracic surgery exercises using simulation techniques, including the positioning of a patient for a thoracotomy. Aside from saving time, the online course reduces costs by not having to purchase textbooks and enables students to study and prepare for in-person training. About Scitent Based in Charlottesville, Va., Scitent helps nonprofits, associations, healthcare organizations and for-profit organizations foster and grow their eLearning business with in-house expertise in sales and marketing, instructional design/courseware development, distribution and LMS technology and services, eCommerce and customer support.
