A new research study has shown 91% of respondents are not yet ready
to automate deployment and release processes. In fact despite the fact
they see automation as a priority, existing business issues take
precedence (59%) or it’s not seen as a priority given the pressure to
maintain business as usual (32%).
83% said they are simply too busy or have inadequate resources to
implement automation, while 94% say a lack of an automation
champion or leader is a barrier to change.
The study, co-authored by MidVision and DZone Research, gave
vendors a wake up call too; citing that 95% of respondents say
deployment automation is being held back by a lack of understanding
of the available technologies and how to get hold of them.

The survey’s findings included:
The cowboy hero culture – why are people still be rewarded for
creating the problems in the first place and getting overtime to
fix them? The automation heroes though need to lead the
charge against these old ways of working
High workloads from IT creates a vacuum for time to make
improvements – even though they may be priorities, the
business has other more pressing issues, such as just “keeping
the lights on”
Try before you buy – Whilst businesses need to use any key
initiative as an excuse to implement automation, make sure you
get a trial and time to create useful evaluations
Companies should work with software vendors to develop an
appropriate process and functionality assessment method to ensure
they get the right short and long term technology partner.
There is a perception that automation is too big an elephant to eat –
whereas all the barriers to the benefits are actually legacy – literally in
software terms and historically from an organisational, time and
priorities – so not real barriers.
IT is changing rapidly with a continued onslaught of new issues big
data, security, regulations in addition to the necessary concerns about
speed of innovation in customer service and competitive advantage.
As a result businesses are finding it increasingly hard to keep with the
speed of change.
Automation is one of the simplest steps a business can take in
managing these challenges. It’s clear from the survey results that

businesses know it’s important, they just need to find time and resource
to make it a priority investment, and like eating the elephant, take it one
bite at a time.
