Volitional form
• The volitional form is used when we want to
express your will or intention to do something
• The volitional form is the plain form of ましょう
(let’s)
• Volitional form can be used with と思います and
show that you think of doing something with
your intention/will
• Volitional form can be used with とします to
mean you try to do something with your intention.

• Take off ます(る if it is plain form) and add
よう

• You have an another way to show your
intention as follows
• テレビを見るつもりです。
• 勉強をするつもりです。
• 明日から、チョコレートを食べないつもりです。
• This is used for more determination or a
more definite plan to carry out the intention

予定 -よてい-
• When you want to express your schedule,
you can use よていです
• 7月の終わりにドイツに出張する予定です。
• 旅行は1週間ぐらいの予定です。

Volitional form + とします
• When you add とします, you can express the
action that you try to do (with intention).
• 宿題をしようとします。
– I try to do my homework.
• フランス語で話そうとします。
– I try to speak in French.
• ねこが店に入ろうとしています。
– A cat is trying to enter the shop.
• 弟はサッカーをしようとしています。
– My younger brother is trying to play football.
Volitional form + とします
• 宿題をしようとしました。
– I tried to do my homework (but I couldn’t/didn’t)
• フランス語で話そうとしました。
– I tried to speak in French (but I couldn’t/didn’t)
• ねこが店に入ろうとしていました。
– A cat was trying to enter the shop(but couldn’t/didn’t)
• 弟はサッカーをしようとしていました。

まお: Chen, did you finish writing your essay already?
チェン: No, I haven’t finished yet. But I am planning to finish it tonight.
まお: Are you? That was good. You are scheduled to travel from Monday as it is consecutive
holidays, aren’t you?
チェン: Yes, I wanted to finish writing all before that because I will go to Japan for 3 weeks.
まお: Where are you scheduled to go in Japan?
チェン: I am going to go to Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and place like that.
まお: Sounds good. What are you going to do?
チェン: Well…. In Tokyo, I want to do shopping and want to go up the sky tree tower. I am
also thinking of going to Nikko.
まお: It would be good if you go to Kamakura as well, wouldn’t it?
チェン: yes, it is. But I don’t like to spend money on travelling expenses. (こうつうひ) So, I
don’t want to move around (いどうする) much. I want to go to the Disney land too….
まお: I like the Disney land too. If you worried about travelling expenses, it is convenient if
you buy a Japan rail pass in advance.
チェン:Is it?
まお: Moreover, it would be cheaper if you stay at the Youth hostel than Japanese Inn.
チェン: That is a good idea, isn’t it? But Japanese Inn’s tasty food is also good, right? I want
to go into hot spring too….
まお: Well… Did you decide your travel itinerary? (にってい)
チェン: No, not yet. I found outward (going) and return flights but for other schedules, I’m
thinking of consider about it when I got home today.
まお: I will help you too. Well, shall we go to a coffee shop or somewhere?
