1. Draw the following food chains in your book
1. Caterpillars are eaten by finches which are
eaten by owls. Caterpillars eat oak leaves
2. Grass is eaten by grasshoppers which are
eaten by rats. Hawks eat snakes who eat
rats.

What do the arrows represent in a
food chain?
2. Owls Hawkes
Finches Snakes
Caterpillar Rats
Oak leaves Grasshopper
Grass
The arrows show how energy is passed through a
series of animals / different trophic levels
3. • By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
– To identify terms producers and consumers (L3)
– Draw simple food chains from information provided (L5)
– Use food chains to draw food webs (L6)
– Evaluate the impact of a change in population size on
food webs(L6/7)

Food chains and food webs
Literacy Objective:
Use key terms to interpret feeding
relationships
Skills Objective:
Independent and reflective
learning
4. Human
Cow
Grass
Producer
• Makes food from sun using
photosynthesis
Primary Consumer
• Gains energy by eating
producers.
• Usually herbivores
Secondary Consumer
• Gains energy by eating
primary consumers.
• Usually carnivores but can be
omnivores

5. 14/07/2022
Rather than
drawing a food
chain for each
food an animal
eats, we combine
them to produce a
food web
Lets Check !
Rabbits and wood mouse
both feed on caterpillars.
Caterpillars feeds on
grass. Owl eats wood
mouse and rabbits.
6. • Task 1 - construct three separate food chains.
• Task 2 Then reconstruct these into a food web. Identify
trophic level, prey and predator.
• Task 3 Evaluate the impact of a species loss in one
chain on the whole food web.
• Task 4 Assume than there are 10,000 plants. Estimate
the numbers for each species.
Can you draw a graph to show this? Explain any
differences.
1. Aphids eat plants which are eaten by Ladybird. The ladybird is a prey
of the Blue tits. Owls feed on the Blue tits.
2. Moth Larva feeds on plants which are eaten by spiders. Owls eat
chiffchaff who eat spiders. Spiders are also a prey of the Blue tits.
3.Stoats eats Voles which feeds on the plants. Voles are also a food to
the Owls
11. Progress Check – answer the following in full
sentences on white boards.
1. What does the arrow in a food chain represent?
Show how energy is transferred between different trophic levels
2. What is always the producer in a food chain?
Green plants
3. Is the primary consumer in a food chain normally a carnivore or
herbivore? Explain why.
A herbivore as it feeds on green plants
4. What will happen to the
population of slugs if the
population of thrushes
decreases
The slugs would increase
14. Human
Cow
Grass
Producer
• Makes food from sun using
photosynthesis
Primary Consumer
• Gains energy by eating
producers.
• Usually herbivores
Secondary Consumer
• Gains energy by eating
primary consumers.
• Usually carnivores but can be
omnivores

Peer assess
Put key word in the learning objective section of the lesson plan – producer consumer prey predator energy transfer herbivore carnivore omnivore
Key question#
Key planning
Where am I assessing
SAT papers – that is assessment
Answers slide that will be purple pened
Including what arrows are for.
By now I am sure you know what the focus of the lesson is going to be – by the end of the lesson you should know ---------
Differentiated questions What happens if you are a vegetarian? Or a vegan If you eat both plants and animals? Where does that put you in the food chain?
Go through task, use AFL to measure progress.
Teacher assessment – teacher observation of activity
Introduce what a tertiary consumer is .
Other examples where it happens in the environment
Take the arrow out – with namers of the animals written
Find visual to help explain this.
Teach quickly- keep it simple – zoom in each bar – talk about bar length.
Differentiated questions What happens if you are a vegetarian? Or a vegan If you eat both plants and animals? Where does that put you in the food chain?
Go through task, use AFL to measure progress.
Remind them of pyramid of numbers – bar length, its not always pyramid shaped
Resources – envelpes with the food chains in with colours
Big piece of sugar paper felt tip pens stick the paper – give blue tack – graph paper to draw pyramid on numenrs –
Give SAT pappers – have differentiated question paper - work on this
Teaching point – tell them biomass is alwaus pyramid
