2. SOUTH SECEDES FROM
THE UNION
December 24th, 1860
The force of events moved very quickly upon
the election of Lincoln. South Carolina acted
first, calling for a convention to secede from
the Union. State by state, conventions were
held, and the Confederacy was formed.
3. FORT SUMTER IS ATTACKED
APRIL 12-14, 1861

BOMBED THE FORT, THIS
STARTED THE CIVIL WAR.
4. The Battle of Antietam
September 17, 1862
• The first major battle in the American
Civil war, and was the bloodiest battle
in American History. There were over
23,000 casualties, and it resulted in a
Union victory.
5. The Emancipation
Proclamation is Passed
January 1st, 1863
• An order by Lincoln,that proclaimed
freedom for the slaves of the 10 states
still in rebellion during the Civil War,
3.1 million of 4 million slaves in the
U.S.
6. The Battle of Gettysburg
July 1st-3rd, 1863
• A battle in Gettysburg
Pennsylvania, this was
the turning point of
the war, it was
another very bloody
war in American
History. Resulted in a
union victory.
7. The Gettysburg Address
November 19th, 1863
A speech by President
Lincoln,The most well known
speech in American History. To
the dedication of the soldiers that
died in the Civil War. The speech
talked about the human equality,
and expressed in the Declaration
of Independence and
constitution, that those men died
for.
8. The Wade-Davis Bill Passed by
Congress
July 2nd, 1864
A bill for the reconstruction
for the South, it gave
Confederate states re-
admittance to the Union.
Although Congress passed it,
Lincoln pocket voted it, and it
never took effect.
9. Freedman's Bureau is
March 3rd, 1865
A U.S. Federal
Agency that helped
freed slaves during
the Reconstruction,
providing food,
housing and medical
aid to those in need.
10. The Surrender at
Appomattox Courthouse
April 9th, 1865
The final engagement of battle
from the Confederates under
General Robert E Lee, before
surrendering to the Union
Army. This was General Lee's
final stand, and when he
finally realized that he was
terribly outnumbered, he
surrendered.
11. President Lincoln is Assassinated
April 14th, 1865
Five days after the Confederates
surrendered, President Lincoln
was assassinated by Confederate
conspirator and well known
stage actor John Wilkes Booch.
The people of the Northern U.S.
who were in dismay.
12. The Ku Klux Klan is Created
1865
After there recent loss in the Civil
War, a group of Confederate
veterans took out their anger by
forming the Ku Klux Klan. They
made acts of violence and murder
against black Americans and
White Republicans.
13. The 13th Amendment Passed
December 6th, 1865
An Amendment to the U.S.
Constitution, this outlawed the
act of slavery. This was passed
and proved that the
Emancipation Proclamation
wasn't just a temporary war
measure.
14. The First Reconstruction Act is Passed
March 2nd, 1867
Says the rebel states would be
divided up into the military
districts. This was the first
attempt to bring the south back
together with the Union.
15. The Second Reconstruction Act is
Passed
March 23rd, 1867
This act made adult
males of the south
swear their loyalty to
the United States.
16. The 14th Amendment is Passed
July 9th, 1868
• The 14th Amendment to the
U.S. Constitution gave black
Americans the right to become
U.S. citizens, and the right to
due process. This was huge to
the Millions of slaves newly
freed.
17. President Andrew Jackson is Impeached
March 4th, 1869
Following Lincoln's
assassination, his vice
president, Andrew Jackson
took office. In the
reconstruction Johnson failed
to include the rights of the
newly free men, so he was
impeached by the house of
Representatives.
18. Ulysses S Grant Becomes President
March 4th, 1869
Named President after Andrew
Jackson was impeached. He was
a celebrated war hero and
general in the Civil war, he led
the Union Army to victory with
the same bold leadership that
made him a great president.
