  4. 4. What is Grapevine Communication? Grapevine Communication is an informal channel of business communication It is mostly found in low levels of an organization Grapevine cannot be used as formal communication channel. It provides a channel for issues. Grapevine is called so because it spreads at all levels irrespective of the authority level. Though formal channels exist, the informal channels develops when people interact with others in an organization.
  5. 5. Examples  CEO may have friendly relations with the Production Manager. The CEO may tell the Production Manager about an upcoming takeover of another company by their organization. The Production Manager spreads such news without the formal announcement of this news through the right organizational channels  A company has not yet declared its annual profits. Yet, rumors spread about the figures of profit of the company and about the amount of bonus that will be declared based on such profits

  11. 11. Managing the Grapevine Communication It is important to understand that it is not possible to completely abolish or stop the grapevine activity in an organization
  12. 12. The organization should not eliminate the grapevine communication because it can help the employees in doing their work. The grapevine communication among the employees and employers can not be stopped even though the upper level of management put an effort on it. There are several ways on how to deal with grapevine communications and next it can be use as a medium channel between the employer and employee in the organization.

  14. 14. Email Communication  Email is widely used as a form of business communication and overall it is a highly effective communication tool. Email is inexpensive, only requiring an Internet connection that is generally already present in the business. Although a printout of emails is possible, emails often stay as soft copies because archiving and retrieving email communications is easy to do. From the CEO to the janitorial staff and even temporary employees of the business can send and receive email communications.

  20. 20. Inappropriate Use of Email  Email is vey popular because it is very easy to use but it is not always a good medium for communication. By many authorities it should not be used when –  The message is long, complicated or need negotiation.  Questions and information need clarification and discussion.  Content confidential, sensitive information and requires security.  When it is need emotional charged or vocal conversation to mean soften the words or negotiate meaning.  For certain situations which is very unpleasant and uncomfortable to describe by email and better to say face to face.  When the message contains sensitive issue, relays feelings or attempts to resolve conflicts.
