 Automation or automatic control, is the use of various control systems for operating
equipment such as machinery, processes in factories, switching in telephone networks, aircraft
and other applications with minimal or reduced human intervention.
 The biggest benefit of automation is it reduces the labor, saves energy and power
consumption.
 We have different types of automations like on-off control system, sequence control system
and feedback control system.
 This control system is of two types:
1. open loop control system which gives output based on inputs
2. closed loop system which takes output and corrections are made based on feedback.
 Advantages:
1. Increased consistency in output.
2. Improved quality of a product.
3. Reducing human labor cost, operation time and work handling time significantly.
 Disadvantages:
1. The development cost of a automation process is very expensive.
2. An automated system will have limited level of intelligence which makes
it more susceptible for errors.
 Automation Tools:
 Engineers have got control over automated devices by use of computer aided
technologies that serve as the basis for mathematical tools used to create
complex system(Eg: CAD software)
 We have different types of automation tools:
1. Distributed Control System is a control system for a process in which
control elements are shared throughout the system.
2. Human-Machine Interface which allows effective operation and control of
machine from human end.
3. Motion control in which position and velocity of machines are controlled
by other devices like hydraulic pump, electric motors(generally servo-a
automatic device that uses error-sensing feedback to correct the performance of
a mechanism). And also have other tools.
 The recent and emerging applications in automation are like:
1. Automated restaurant: In this, food industry has started automation
for ordering process like customers use tablets for ordering and paying bill
through their devices. The food is supplied to customer tables through
conveyer belt system
2. Automated mining: It deals with process and software automation and
also deals with applying robotic technology to mining vehicles and equipment
which reduces human labor.
3. Automated video surveillance: This system monitors the people and
vehicles in real time. Its purpose is to record properties of objects in a given
area and generates warnings or notify to authority about particular events.
4. Home automation: It includes centralized control of lighting, security
locks of gates, doors and other systems, HVAC appliances etc..
5. Industrial automation: It deals with automation of manufacturing,
quality control and material handling process.
We also have other applications in automation.
 The popularity of home automation has been increasing greatly in recent years
through smart phones. In next 5 years, this will make a big impact in the market as
security is needed for every human and house.
 The concept of Internet of things has tied to popularization of home automation.
We have may examples to describe about home automation
1. Sensing of person mood and according to that changing the room temperature,
lighting, playing music etc.
2. A furnace can send a alert message when it needs cleaning. If no one is there at
home and alarm is set, home automation system could call the owner or neighbors.
3. Turning on lights when a person enters room and off when leaves the room.
Controlling the appliances with our eye contact or with voice commands.
4. When a smoke detector detects a fire or smoke through a remote monitoring,
all lights in house blink to alert the members of house in case of emergency.
5. Security in locking system of doors and gates which can be opened only with
help of our fingerprints and raising an alarm if an intruder tries to enter into the
house.
 As the topic is related to automation which reduces human labor and work
load, it is quite interesting to work in such areas.
 The areas which am interested to work is in field of home automation,
robotic technology, automated restaurant .
 In home automation, even though we forgot to switch off electronic devices
and locked our house, the automated system will be sending a message to our
mobile which can be made off from our mobile itself.
 I would like to make an automated window system if there is a leakage of
gas in the house. So that even though there is no one in the house, window
system will take care of the leakage. I also think that if there is a chance of
detecting things like wallet, key chains etc which we forget sometimes with our
smart phones.
 If given an internship, I would like to work on home automation in which
we can extend more properties related to house hold activities.
