How it works.

Wikepedia defines VoIP as “a general term for a family of transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications over IP.”

Voice of Internet Protocol (VoIP) transmits voice conversations over the internet. The sound is transmitted through IP packets.

Online conferencing software's such as Skype utilises the use of VoIP.

By transmitting through IP packets, the sound does not lose functionality or quality.

VoIP is cheaper than normal phone calls and international calls.

VoIP also allows for video conferencing.

Businesses often use VoIP for video conferencing with international business Partners, because it is cheaper to set Up, and often faster.

Source: http://www.bestpricecomputers.co.uk/glossary/voice-over-ip.htm

One way in which It doesn’t meet its purpose is that it can crash easily

Improvements

One improvement that could be made is to increase bandwidth size.

With the increase of bandwidth it means video streaming will be less faultless and more unlikely to freeze or crash

To send and receive messages quicker and more efficient

Could make the chats between a larger amount of more efficient and realistic, by either making the screens or web cam feeds larger which means you can see all the people you are talking to

Make the technology of computer lip reading to a higher standard so that the computer can play it to deaf people

Non Internet alternatives.

A non internet alternative is 3 way phone calls.

The first person to ring the numbers hosts the conversation, and all other people connect through them.

There is no limit on the number of people that can be placed in this call.

The price of making this conference is greater than a regular phone call. For example, The cost is priced for both phone calls, as well as an extra 50p.

Source: http://www.zyra.org.uk/3way.htm
Software

This is an example of an online conference site. As you can see this site offers cheap computer calling and also no hidden connection call charges. The disadvantage of this is that there might be hidden charges and by the looks of the home page it isn’t web cam operative. This is automatically a big disadvantage.

This conference site is called GoTo meeting. It is a featured VoIP site which supports both mac and pc which is a good advantage
