Autobiographical
Writing
What is narrative writing?
RECALL or PREDICT
1. What is the definition and/or
characteristics of an “autobiography?”
2. What is the definition and/or
characteristics of a “narrative?”
3. What is the definition and/or
characteristics of a “memoir?”
Characteristics of a
narrative
1. A true (non-fiction)
account from one
narrator, written in
first-person P.O.V.
Characteristics of a
narrative
2. Must be in-depth
look at ONE specific
incident or a series of
related incidents.
Characteristics of a
narrative
3. IT IS WRITTEN IN
PAST TENSE. The piece
is always reflective –
looking back to the past
and recounting SPECIFIC
DETAILS of what
happened.
Characteristics of a
narrative
4. THEME. A new
understanding or
insight is gained; a
lesson is learned, re-
learned, or reinforced.
Characteristics of a
narrative
5. Conversational
voice…the reader of
the memoir feels
spoken to.
Characteristics of a
narrative
6. Includes an
appropriate
establishment of tone
(attitude of the
author)
Voice and Tone
Voice =
PERSONALITY STYLE
TONE = ATTITUDE
…is a writer’s unique use
of language that allows
a reader to “hear” a
human personality in
his/her writing.
 Sentence structure
 Diction (word choice)
 Imagery
 Use of characters and
dialogue
…is the attitude a writer
takes toward a subject.
Details that help to create
a tone that might be:
 Playful
 Serious
 Bitter
 Angry
Tone reflects the feeling of
the AUTHOR. While
identifying tone, think of
an ADJECTIVE describing
an EMOTION.
Make a T-Chart:
Is the following a memoir?
Reasons it could be: Reasons it can’t be:
 List at least 2-3  List at least 2-3
“Radioactive” Imagine Dragon
I'm waking up to ash and dust
I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust
I'm breathing in the chemicals
I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
Whoa
I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, whoa, I'm radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, whoa, I'm radioactive, radioactive
I raise my flags, don my clothes
It's a revolution, I suppose
We're painted red to fit right in
Whoa
I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
Whoa
All systems go, sun hasn't died
Deep in my bones, straight from inside
“Mean” Taylor Swift
You, with your words like knives
And swords and weapons that you use against me
You have knocked me off my feet again
Got me feeling like I'm nothing
You, with your voice like nails on a chalkboard
Calling me out when I'm wounded
You picking on the weaker man
You can take me down with just one single blow
But you don't know, what you don't know...
Someday I'll be living in a big ol' city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Someday I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so mean?
You, with your switching sides
And your wildfire lies and your humiliation
You have pointed out my flaws again
As if I don't already see them
I walk with my head down
Trying to block you out 'cause I'll never impress
you
I just wanna feel okay again
I bet you got pushed around
Somebody made you cold
But the cycle ends right now
'Cause you can't lead me down that road
And you don't know, what you don't know...
Someday I'll be living in a big ol' city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Someday I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so mean?
And I can see you years from now in a bar
Talking over a football game
With that same big loud opinion
But nobody's listening
Washed up and ranting about the same old bitte
things
Drunk and grumbling on about how I can't sing
But all you are is mean
