Components
1. Housing: The exterior
structure that holds all
components of a
reverse osmosis system
together is called the
housing.
2. Feed Valve: The feed
valve connects to the
water main and is
responsible for
injecting water into a
reverse osmosis
system.
3. Reverse Osmosis
Membrane: This is
the main component of
a reverse osmosis
system. This
component flushes out
any dissolved minerals
from the water and
removes them from the
system.

Storage
Tank: This is
the tank that
holds water that
has been
purified and is
ready to drink.
Automatic
Shutoff
Valve: When
the storage tank is
full, this valve
activates
automatically. This
valve prevents the
water main from
leaking any
additional water
into the reverse-
osmosis system. It
conserves water
and saves energy.

6. Optional Components
Pump: Booster pressure
pump should be
installed between filter stage
(filter housing) of the system.
Do NOT install the pump
before the filter housing due to
the contamination of raw
(inlet) water. It is only
installed if more pressure of
water is required (in case of
more than 1 stages of
filtration)
Power supply: To
operate pump we need a
power supply so power
supply is only used when a
pump is required.
Check Valve: Check
valve prevents pressurized
filtered water in the storage
tank from flowing back and
rupturing the RO
membrane.

7. Optional Components
Pre-Filters:
These filters can
be used to remove
large
contaminants like
dirt and dust.
Post-Filters:
The purpose of post-
filters is to remove
anything that the
reverse osmosis
membrane and pre-
filters missed. A
granular activated
carbon polishing
filter removes any
remaining tastes and
odors in water.

8. Thermostat
Thermostat: Device to
detect temperature
changes for the purpose
of maintaining the
temperature of an
enclosed area essentially
constant. In a system
including relays, valves,
switches, etc., the
thermostat generates
signals, usually
electrical, when the
temperature exceeds or
falls below the desired
value.

10. Cleaning
 RO membrane cleaning RO membrane will inevitably
require periodic cleaning, anywhere from 1 to 4 times a year
depending on the feed water quality. As a general rule, if the
normalized pressure drop or the normalized salt passage has
increased by 15%, then it is time to clean the RO membranes.
If the normalized permeate flow has decreased by 15% then it
is also time to clean the RO membranes.
