What is Universal Design?
● Universal Design is a way of structuring
something so that everyone can use it to their
fullest potential.
● For example, having handicapped accessible
entrances is universal design, as it allows
everyone access to a building.

Learning?
● Universal Design is used in learning to allow
every student to learn to their fullest potential,
despite disabilities, second-language learning,
or different learning styles.

Principles of Universal Design in
Learning
● Provide multiple means of representation
● Provide multiple means of action and
expression
● Provide multiple means of engagement

Multiple Representations
● Represent concepts in multiple ways, beyond
just words or text.
– For example, in math, use word problems and
physical objects that learners can manipulate

Multiple Means of Action and
Expression
● Provide students with a number of ways to
express what they learn.
– For example, give them a written option, drawn
option, spoken option, for a particular
homework assignment.

Multiple Means of Engagement
● Use multiple ways of instruction, to get
students interested in and motivated to learn.
