3. DISASTER:
A natural disaster is a major adverse event resulting from natural
processes of the earth.
A natural disaster can cause loss of life or property damage and
typically leaves some economic damage in its wake.
Natural disaster claim the lives of thousands of people in the world
every year.
Disaster can leave lasting damage, which can require years to repair.
It’s hard to say which natural disaster is the most deadly.
5. TSUNAMI
Tsunami means harbour wave and is caused by the displacement of
a large body of water normally an ocean or a large lake. Tsunamis are
giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the
sea.
The biggest tsunami ever happened at Lituya Bay, Alaska on July
9,1958. the great tsunami was around 150 meters tall.
6. The tsunami caused by 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, is the 6th
deadliest Natural disaster in recorded history with a death toll of
230,210 – 280,00.
Tsunami are generated by any large, impulsive displacement of the
sea level
The most common cause of a tsunami is sea floor uplift associated
with an earthquake.
7. EARTHQUAKE
An earthquake is the result of a sudden release of energy in the
Earth’s crust that creates seismic waves.
They are caused by abnormal movements of the Earth’s tectonic
plates.
Earthquakes can also trigger landslides and occasionally, volcanic
activity.
8. They are measured using seismographs.
The Valdivia earthquake also known as the great Chile an
earthquake is the biggest earthquake ever recorded . It hit Chile on
May 22,1960 with a magnitude of 9.5 and a death toll of around
6000.
Earthquake are caused by slippage within geological faults.
9. FLOOD
A flood is a temporary overflow of water that submerges the Land
that is usually dry.
Flooding may occur as an overflow of water from water bodies,
such as a river, lake or ocean.
Floods often cause damage to homes and businesses if they are in
the natural flood plains of rivers.
10. One of the biggest floods in the world is probably the yellow river
in China 1887 which killed between around 900,00.
Floods can also occur in rivers when the flow rate exceeds the
capacity of the river channel, particularly at bends or meanders in the
waterway.
The flood flow in urbanized areas constitutes a hazard to both the
population and infrastructure.
11. WILDFIRE
An uncontrolled fire often occurring in wildland areas, but which
can also consume houses or agricultural resources .
A wildfire also known as a forest fire, vegetation fire, grass fire,
brush fire or bushfire.
Fossil charcoal indicates that wildfires began soon after the
appearance of terrestrial plants 420 million years ago.
12. One of the largest wildfire is the 1910 wildfire.
They can spread to populated areas and can thus be a threat to
humans and property as well as wildfire.
Wildfires are among the most common forms of natural disaster in
some regions, including Siberia, California, and Australia.
13. LANDSLIDE
A landslide is the movement of rock, earth or debris, down a slapped
section of land.
Landslide are caused by rain, earthquake, volcanoes or other factors
that make the slope unstable.
The largest landslide in history happened because of Mount
St. Helens 3km of rock moved downhill.
