2. Ukraine
• Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It
is the second largest country in
Europe after Russia, which borders it to
the east and north-east. Ukraine also
shares borders with Belarus to the
north; Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to
the west; Romania and Moldova to the
south; and has a coastline along the Sea of
Azov and the Black Sea. It has a
population of about 40 million. The
nation's capital and largest city is Kyiv. The
official and national language is Ukrainian,
and most people are also fluent in
Russian.
4. The first attack
• On 24 February
2022, Russia invaded Ukraine,
marking a steep escalation of
the Russo-Ukrainian War, which
had begun in 2014.
The invasion has caused
Europe's fastest-growing refugee
crisis since World War II, with
more than 6.7 million Ukrainians
fleeing the country and a third of
the population displaced.
5. Evacuation
• More than 6.7 million refugees
have since left Ukraine, while an
estimated 8 million people had
been displaced within the
country by 3 May. Approximately
one-quarter of the country's
total population had left their
homes in Ukraine by 20 March.
90% of Ukrainian refugees are
women and children.
7. Protests in
Bulgaria
• Protests against the Russian
invasion of Ukraine occurred
simultaneously in many places
worldwide, including Russia
and Ukraine. Thousands of
Bulgarians turned out in
protests in various cities in
Bulgaria against the war and in
solidarity with the Ukrainian
people.
9. Many countries around the world
show their support for Ukraine by
donating food, health care, shelter,
education for the Ukrainian
children and military assistance.
They voice their disagree with
Russia's actions by protesting and
offering their services to the

11. • The protection that Bulgaria
provides to foreigners includes
asylum, international protection
and temporary protection.
• People that apply for international
protection have the right to
shelter, food, health insurance,
psychological assistance and
education for children. If the
procedure for granting
international protection is not
completed within three months
after the submission of the
application, they have equal
access to the labor market like all
Bulgarian citizens.
