Week 1: Welcome to the first part of Level 4

Unit 1 is called Education. What can you say about your formal education? How long
do you still intend to study? Is there a limit for you? Do you believe professional
experience is as important as formal education?
We are going to have one lesson per day. This way you do not get tired of studying and
can feel how good it is to learn little by little.
As it is an important issue, I can’t forget to ask you to review the subject from time to
time.

On the first day, do the seven activities in Lesson 1 – Vocabulary. In this lesson you will
learn vocabulary to talk about feelings and impressions. Are you good at expressing
how you feel? How do you deal with good and bad feelings?
On day 2, Lesson 2 presents eight activities teaching you to talk about school
expectations and requirements. You’ll also compare students’ schedules. Can anyone
take your course? What are the requirements to be accepted? As soon as you found
out you would take this course, what were your expectations towards it?
The seven activities for Lesson 3 come on day 3. You will use the simple present to ask
and answer questions about school routines and occupations. This is useful knowledge
in case you take a course abroad! Then, there are more seven activities on day 4,
Lesson 4, teaching us how to use the present continuous to talk about activities
related to school.
On the last day, let’s enjoy the listening activities in Lesson 6. You’ll listen to a
description of the University of Texas and also talk about facilities at the university.
Take a break, this is the end of the first week.

This week we plan to finish Unit 1 and start Unit 2. When finishing a unit we are
supposed to read a book. This task in divided in three parts. The first part takes one
day and this is the day that you use to prepare the vocabulary. The other three days of
the week are used to read the pages of the book. So, divide them accordingly and you
won’t have too much to read on a day. Then, the last day of the week is to watch the
video, do the quiz and read the complementary text. If you keep your schedule
organized, your days will be easier.
This week we are going to read the book Capoeira: The Fighting Dance. This story is
set in our country, more exactly in Bahia.
For each day we’ll have one lesson to study. On the first day, study the seven activities
in Lesson 5. Learn how to ask and answer questions about student activities using the
present continuous.

On the second day, study Lesson 7 where you will read information about the Open
University.
On the third day of this week, besides studying the four activities of Lesson 8 where
you’ll watch and listen to a video about Earth University, you also take some time to
review what was studied in Unit 1. After this, do the unit end pages.
On the fourth day we’ll start Unit 2, called In the Past. In Lesson 1, you’ll learn
vocabulary related to history and archaeology.
In Lesson 2 we’ll have seven activities to learn how to compare life in the past to life
today. You will also use the simple past to talk about life in the past.

In the beginning of he week let’s prepare the vocabulary for the book The Lost
Temples of the Maya. The book talks about an archaeologist in Guatemala who has
searched for one city for twenty years. Will he find the lost temples of the Maya?
Would you be patient enough to look for something for such a long time?
On this same day study the six activities in Lesson 3, Unit 2 where you’ll learn how to
use the simple past of be to talk about situations in the past.
On the second day start reading the pages of the book The Lost Temples of the Maya
and divide the pages of the book in three days of study. Bu it’s not all, also study
Lesson 4 and learn how to talk about past habits using used to. You will also compare
practices in the past to te present.
Day three is to focus on the nine activities of Lesson 5. here you’ll ask and answer
questions about an ancient site. Also, listen to and answer questions about someone’s
childhood.

Lesson 6, the listening lesson, is to be studied on the fourth day. There are four
activities and you’ll listen to a description of Pompeii. You’ll also learn how to
sequence events. Study Lesson 7 – Reading and Writing – on this same day. Read an
article about a scientist who studies the past and classify information.
Well, the last day of this week is dedicated to Lesson 8 where you will listen to and
watch a video about the ancient site of Angkor Wat.
Also, on this last day watch the video, read the complementary text and take the quiz
for the book The Last Temples of the Maya. Would you consider visiting the site?
Review the subject and study the unit end pages before taking a break.

called Changing Lifestyles. Are you satisfied with your lifestyle? Do you think you take
enough time to rest and have fun? And what about your eating habits? Do you think
people’s appearance show their lifestyles?
Let’s have one Lesson per day as it follows.
On the first day of this week let’s study Lesson 1 with six vocabulary activities that will
teach you vocabulary to talk about future goals.
Day 2 is to learn how to use the present continuous to talk about future plans.

Time for one more step!
During this week we will read the book Saving the Amazon Together. The Amazon
rainforest is in crisis. Illegal miners are destroying the homes of millions of plants and
animals; however, one group of scientist is exploring the far off regions of a newly
formed national park to stop the destruction.
Dividing how to read the book is not a secret anymore, ok? Well, just in case – one day
to prepare the vocabulary, 3 days to read the pages and one final day to watch the
video, answer the quiz and read the complementary text. Take the responsibility and
do your best!

describe obligations.

couldn’t.

In Lesson 6, the activities will give you the opportunity to listen to someone talking
about her schedule. Do you have regular schedule every week? Can you describe it?
Do you usually make to-do lists to help you organize your time better?

Besides this, read the book Extreme Skydiving. The story is set in the United Kingdom,
in the northern part of England. The story talks about one man who is experimenting
with various methods of increasing his speed when skydiving. Read the book and
discover what he is doing to go faster.

And now it’s time to start our last unit. Unit 5 is called Leisure Activities. What do you
do in your free time? How do you spend your weekends?
So, on day 2 study Lesson 1 that contains six activities teaching you vocabulary to talk
about leisure activities.
