Knowing there are many programs through out the US and International that have a focused curriculum gives an organization a better return on the investment. Keeping in mind that the majority of the entry level opportunities will fall within the operations side of the business a student should be follow a track that will give them a balanced education. A key component that all students should be have is the accounting and budgeting process. 4. In light of the current economic environment opportunities to work for a great organization are out there. Students need to be open minded to start in non-management positions that will allow them to continue to develop their skills for future opportunities that will come available.
  5. your career? Remember we only need a limited number of Event Managers, so you may consider other positions first. Where you start your career is not an indication of where you will end up. In fact the nice thing about working for an organization like Marriott is we encourage you to grow your career one than one brand and discipline. This is truly a benefit to you and along with the organization. Internship opportunities are available in our Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Renaissance Hotels & Resorts, Residence Inn, Courtyard, TownePlace Suites, and Marriott Vacation Club International brands. Marriott Lodging has internships the Rooms, Food & Beverage, Accounting-Finance, Sales and Recreation disciplines. Your internship experience will be a combination of practical work experience, task assignments, and an introduction to Marriott’s corporate culture and workplace values. Internships are typically 10 to 12 weeks in the summer, fall, winter and spring sessions. Managers in training will in most cases have the title of Asst. In some brands/disciplines this will not be the case. However, regardless of your title the organization expectations in this role is to display your leadership and learn the standards of the organization and how we do business. In an organization like Marriott you can grow/change your career in one discipline or choose to explore multiple career opportunities with every leaving Marriott.
  6. Do your students have what is takes to be a leaders? These are the competencies the industry is looking for in Management and non-management candidates. Keeping in mind that depending on the level of the position will depend on the level of expertise requiree. i.e. for interns we expect you to have some of these qualities but realize you are still in a development phase. Make sense? Let’s talk about expectations and why these skills are important. Leadership – it is not just about having a “title”. What is the role of the leader? Generating Profitable business strategies and motivating the team in the desired direction Managing Execution – Aligning accountability, authority, resources and control systems – how do you get the work/task complete Building Relationships – Personally building productive relationship and fostering a positive climate for teamwork – It is all about the people. Those who work for you, those in other departments, and those who you may only cross paths with occasionally in your daily work activity. Learning & Applying Personal Expertise Actively pursuing learning to build own capacity and to apply the learning – learn from others – this is very important as an entry level candidate to use those who have been in the hotel regardless of their role/title. Improve your skills, and use the knowledge to help others improve. Generating Talent & Organizational Capability – Building the organizations capability through effective talent management and capability practices. How many of you have had an opportunity to hire other people? Others can look at your experiences in forming a team in a classroom or extra curricular activity. How did you do? What did you do with the person that was not completely their task? What did you do with the person not following the rules? These are all items that fall into this category
  7. Your students need to be prepared. A resume is a calling card, and should not be more than one page. Also need to take into consideration what does are the employer/job requirements. Should they tailor their resume? Not always necessary, but could potentially help them to stand out. Questions about objectives always come up and different individual recruiters my be pro/con – if you have an objective make sure it make sense. Interviewing skills is where a great deal of separation will happen. On-line tools are assessments are moving to be a norm. Where students have a tendency to get in trouble is they try to determine what is the right answer, as opposed to answer the question from their personal prospective. Behavioral style interviews will require the students to look past performance and talk about a particular situation. The need to learn to describe a spefic situation, what action they took and describe the results.
