Campus Threat Assessment Overview
•  Threat assessment is an objective, fact-finding process. Recommended
as a standard of care for preventing campus violence.

•  Purpose is to gather and analyze information, assess whether someone
poses a threat, and then implement risk-reduction strategies if needed.

•  Campus threat assessment programs include:
•  Multi-disciplinary team
•  Threat assessment training
•  Procedures to follow
•  Reporting mechanisms
•  Efforts to encourage reporting

  • 3. Campus Threat Assessment Overview •  Threat assessment is an objective, fact-finding process. Recommended as a standard of care for preventing campus violence. •  Purpose is to gather and analyze information, assess whether someone poses a threat, and then implement risk-reduction strategies if needed. •  Campus threat assessment programs include: •  Multi-disciplinary team •  Threat assessment training •  Procedures to follow •  Reporting mechanisms •  Efforts to encourage reporting 3

Assessment Tools & Practice - 1 •  What, if any, is the best assessment for determining pathway to violence? •  Is there one assessment over another that is good for both students and staff of concern? •  Would you ever recommend using more than one assessment to make a decision regarding a person of concern? 4

  • 15. The Team(s) - 1 •  Is it beneficial and/or best practice for campuses to have separate Behavioral Intervention Teams and Threat Assessment Teams? If so, how do they coordinate info sharing? If not, why? •  Should there be a different team that assesses threats from a Title IX perspective than other conduct perspectives?  What if the person in charge of sanctioning is the lead on the traditional threat assessment team? 15

The Team(s) - 2 •  What campus departments/entities do you recommend as regular sitting members of a campus threat assessment team? •  What are your thoughts on a threat assessment team being co-chaired by a Student Affairs representative and a Human Resources representative? •  Do you feel the best location for a threat assessment chair/ director be part of the police department?
